Sara's actions
Kitchen
Visit the Butcher
I will purchase meats and cheeses from the deli counter or a butcher shop, and use my own containers to do so.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 3 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Bathroom
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bedroom
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Study
Print in Draft Mode
To extend the life of my ink cartridges, I will set my printer default to draft mode to use less ink or toner per print job.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Borrowed Books
The average paperback book has the same carbon footprint of driving about 7 miles (11 km) in an average car. Instead of purchasing new books this month, I will borrow books, e-books, and/or audiobooks from my local library or library-affiliated apps, or host a book swap with my friends.
Kitchen
Fight Local Food Waste
Who says saving money and saving the planet don't go together? Using an app like Too Good To Go or Flashfood, I'll help rescue food from local bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste.
Study
Recycle My Tech
There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Visit the ButcherHow has using your own containers impacted the quality of the food you receive, and your awareness of the origins of the food you consume?
Sara Paterson 7/31/2024 11:18 AMI am able to maintain the freshness of my food. It is not just hoping that the Styrofoam tray and thin plastic wrap is going to keep my food fresh while it waits to be used. Food preservation is the biggest thing I have noticed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Recycle My TechBesides reusing materials, what are some other environmental, societal, and economical benefits of recycling our old electronics?
Sara Paterson 7/26/2024 6:35 AM"Increasing sustainable electronics management efforts can create green jobs, lead to more productive reuse of valuable materials, increase the value of American exports, and support a vibrant American recycling and refurbishing industry."
The average American buys a new phone every 18 months. Crazy how the mindset to "have the newest and greatest tech" causes so much waste. Although I am not someone who gets a phone every 1.5 years, I will definitely be looking into the program our carrier uses when we trade back our phones. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Buy Only What I NeedAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Sara Paterson 7/16/2024 8:01 AMIt has been wonderful to focus on the true needs of the household. Utilizing or repurposing things in place of those we thought we needed. I will hold fast to this commitment as Prime Day starts. Stay Strong with me! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Sara Paterson 7/16/2024 7:59 AMIt has relieved the stress I put on myself to be perfect in this new journey. It is okay to fumble, because we are all growing and learning through this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Use What You HaveBesides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?
Sara Paterson 7/11/2024 10:33 AMI am recognizing there are food items in the house that my husband and son don't prefer, so I bring them (Oatmeal, soup, crackers, etc) to work so I have a (not so secret anymore) stash for if I forget to bring breakfast or lunch with me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Clean the Dryer VentWhen was the last time you cleaned your dryer's air vents? Was it easier or more difficult than you anticipated?
Sara Paterson 7/10/2024 4:01 AMWe clean the dryer vent before every use, but we clean the large dryer vent out of the house about once a year. Pretty simple when you use a vacuum to clean it, or a shop vac to blow the debris out, and collect it on the other side. We have kept dryer lint to start our campfires instead of using harmful chemicals/materials.-
Tango The Loggerhead 7/10/2024 9:50 AMI've kept jars of dryer lint for campfires as well! I use the jars from our Cafe! Two for one, I get yummy dessert AND a new jar for the lint.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Fight Local Food WasteWhat was your experience like using these kinds of apps? How can you advocate for more businesses to participate?
Sara Paterson 7/09/2024 9:55 AMThe experience was wonderful, but you will definitely find the businesses you want to repeat business with based on their surprise bags. I can't believe that there is such a variety of businesses that have partnered on "Too Good to Go" as well. We have been lucky to get 4 surprise bags so far. These bags have included a variety of things, such as; muffins, parfaits, sandwiches, snack boxes, and even a huge pizza all at a fraction of the price the food would regularly cost. As a bonus you are saving the food from being trashed a few hours or days later. I am sharing this app with friends all over and hope they can find as much joy in using the app as I have. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Borrowed BooksLibraries have immense benefits for society. What are some cool resources your library has that might not be as well-known as book borrowing? What are some ways you advocate for libraries and share these resources with your community?
Sara Paterson 7/09/2024 9:48 AMWe enjoy signing up for the summer reading program. It encourages us to utilize the library, but through the program it also challenges us to get out as a family and explore. Some badges this year were: identify 3 plants in your neighborhood, pick up 5 pieces of trash, find a shell, and read a nonfiction book about the natural world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Whole Foods MealsShare your favorite whole foods-based meal recipe with us!
Sara Paterson 7/09/2024 9:42 AMRight now a favorite is homemade pasta and pesto with burrata. I have enjoyed seeing my son be interested in making dinner and offering to help in any way during the past few weeks. Now he has an interest and desire to learn more about how I prepare food and why we focus on whole food based meals. -
Sara Paterson 6/22/2024 5:42 AMSo excited to join this year and become more aware of single use plastic in my families habits. We have already utilized one of the "actions". It is an app called, "Too Good to Go." Business are teaming up in our community to reduce food waste. We were able to get a surprise bag containing 2 sandwiches, yogurt parfait, poppy seed bread, and macaroons for $5.-
Tango The Loggerhead 6/27/2024 7:15 AMThat's such a great idea!
