Jeanne's actions

Study

Investigate Oil Subsidies

Our tax dollars are subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, making the cost of plastics artificially low and encouraging further plastics production. I will spend 5 minutes learning about oil subsidies and how I can advocate for their elimination.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Follow the Chasing Arrows

The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.

COMPLETED

Declutter Sustainably

While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Recycling Textiles

Every single textile ever made will, at some point, become worn out - and dealing with that waste costs millions of tax dollars every year. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the different types of textile recycling and creating a plan for what I'll do with my clothes and other textiles when they are too worn out to use anymore.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Plastic History Buff

Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.

COMPLETED

Study

Numbers Everywhere

The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Complete a Waste Audit

I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.

Go For a Walk

Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 20 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.

Study

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

Study

Dig into Bioplastics

I will spend at least 20 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 10 friends, family, and/or colleagues.

Tour A Waste Management Facility

I will spend at least 120 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.

Remember appreciating this photo art someone shared at beginning of July plastic free and want to share it again. May we have begun to turn off the spigot on this and more!

Just saw my last trophy/sparkles for this challenge - I admit it is just fun to see. Realize next Eco-challenge I decide to participate in I better pick more challenges!! :)
This has been a fun learning experience and more awareness of plastic impact has been huge!
I'll get more of those books read now. Congratulations on all we did here folks!!

What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

Honestly, if I would do more bulk buying - re-using plastic bags - I would have such little waste! Don't see myself making a milk at this time, or tofu both which come in tetra-pak - never plastic. Some paper which cannot be recycled, reused or composted. The few vitamin type bottles unable to reuse somehow.
It's the WINE glass bottles which is my true nemesis! We cannot recycle glass in North Central Washington. There are a few efforts in the community to try and help provide. Actually purchased pretty expensive glass crusher in hopes for cullet and use in pathways. Disappointing - and even with time in concrete mixer with a bit of water & rocks. A LOT of WORK - so, it happens often - but those wine bottles make really good weight at the bottom of the garbage can on windy nights. Garbage goes out every 2-3 weeks for the two of us.
No, I'm not going to stop the red wine - and will try to get better at the work we invested in, sigh.

It seems like bulk buying of food doesn't always make sense for small households, since the goods might not stay fresh and tasty. And since we have to take things like medicine and supplements for health, we have no option other than accepting the packaging. But definitely you get a pass for red wine. Hey, what if you saved all the bottles, put different amounts of water in each one, and connected them to create a huge musical instrument? You'd probably get to be the cover girl for sustainability magazines. Don't laugh too hard--a man here in Houston covered his house in beer cans, and now it's a landmark considered a great work of folk art.

Embracing imperfection again - revisited #4 LDPE "bread bags, bags" and will continue to use, re-use them as much as possible. Then to bag recycle bin at store (Albertsons for me) or to trash. Facing the "wish-cycling" and making informed decisions, choices is the way to go. Thanks for all the information this month!!

It's been a great challenge for me! Love seeing all the participants and impacts. Some post never, others of us post multiple times :)
Today my husband's original art piece he purchased arrived from Flin Flon Manitoba - and there was NO PLASTIC in it anywhere!! Instead they STUFFED shredded newspaper/paper into cut to size cardboard and carefully encased it. He brought it home from the post office on his motorcycle!! I can use the shredded paper in my composting bags. I absolutely loved it!!

Oh wait, I just noticed that your team IS considered to be affiliated with the Coalition of North American Zoos and Aquariums. Well, whatever the case, we're kicking some plastics' behinds. :)

Hey, I just realized that you and I and my teammate Kerry currently are the three highest-ranking participants not affiliated with a zoo or similar team! I think that's pretty cool.

Three more days and it's been amazing learning and sharing! During this short break in heat I was able to get LOTS of work done and make the farmer's market! Re-used my own bags and it was cool enough to make the cherry marmalade - more cherry whatevers tomorrow. Hope to squeak in some apricot canning before triple digits return in a few days. We'll see. If I wanted a real cool down I'd sleep in the recycled plastic hammock I've mentioned previously. Recycled plastic only works when we can support the recycled product. There are so many more types out now than when I got this one! I never google - I use Ecosia!

Wow, cherry marmalade sounds wonderful! And I love the hammock. I've thought about getting one, but I'm pretty sure the feral cats would take it over and I'd never get to use it.

Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

While I was hoping to tour a composting facility, it got postponed until September :( SO - I thoroughly toured, investigated and talked with Eastside Rebuild and Small Change right here in Cashmere. Very exciting to discover tool library, building materials - of all kinds including used black plastic which I've incorporated into weed control over hot summer. Also visited Vamanos in Wenatchee area who are awesome business of 10 years who help folks move, dispose and they recycle as much as they can. Very grateful to have these businesses locally and also Waste Management education. Still look forward to compost tour :)

Realize I did not have to do another new action as hemp replacing lots of plastic (paper, fabric and much more) actually fits under "Dig into bioplastics" challenge.

Only 4 more days! It's been a great challenge for me to do even more and continuing to learn about, well honestly, the nastiness of plastic in our world today! Was happy to see from the White House this week report on what our government is doing about this!

Congratulations on a great Ecochallenge! Like you, I always learn so much. I hope I'm a positive influence on others...but at the very least, I know I've made a difference, even though it's small. It all adds up, right? :)

“new goal to phase out federal procurement of single-use plastics from food service operations, events, and packaging by 2027, and from all federal operations by 2035.”

That’s a lot of SUP not being used! 😁

A short read and great synopsis of plastic, history to present.
