Dana's actions

Bathroom

Eco Deodorant

Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Use a Reusable Mug

Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 3 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Bedroom

Ditch Dryer Sheets

Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Bedroom

Natural Fibers

When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Declutter Sustainably

While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Sunshine Bleached

I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Sustainable Suds

In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Multiple Wears Before Washing

The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

Green Beauty

Globally, packaging manufacturers make about $25 billion each year on plastic beauty and personal care packaging. That's a whole lot of plastic - nearly all of which ends up in landfills. When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Eco Detergent

Ditch the plastic jugs, artificial dyes, and harmful ingredients! When it's time to replace my current laundry detergent, I will switch to a natural laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Keep My Community Clean

In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Dive Into Expiration Dates

Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 10 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Clean the Dryer Vent

Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Plastic Free TP

Most toilet paper is wrapped in plastic #4, or low-density polyethylene - a thin plastic film that cannot be recycled back into more plastic film. To avoid this plastic wrapping, I will purchase toilet paper wrapped in paper instead, or use a reusable toilet paper option.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Homemade or Refillable Cleaners

Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Family + Pets

Mend and Repair

We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Say No to Styrofoam

Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Study

Dig into Bioplastics

I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 5 friends, family, and/or colleagues.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Complete a Waste Audit

I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Share my "why"

I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Buy Only What I Need

I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Study

Numbers Everywhere

The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Sustainable Suds
What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/21/2024 6:46 PM
I use Monday's haircare products (which uses 100% recycled plastic for their packaging), and I have found this is the cheapest option for me personally, as it has lasted the longest for me and it is good quality (got it before it became really popular). It also makes my hair really nice.
side note, any other product I tried looking for was WAY overpriced, i guess because of how it is branded, but yes I prefer mondays :) Affordable and nice
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Ditch Dryer Sheets
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/17/2024 4:32 PM
Main thing I think about is plastic bags, but I can't think of a harmful toxin within the bag itself. Another thing I think about is (that IS toxic) would include water bottles, especially if they have been in the heat for a little bit of time, because some microplastics can get into our bodies
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Eco Detergent
Was this an easy or difficult swap for you to make? Did you have any concerns before making the swap?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/17/2024 4:28 PM
Not necessarily difficult yet, I was mainly concerned about prices because I can usually get so much more loads worth with liquid detergent in plastic bottles. BUT, I was able to utilize prime day and purchase eco-friendly materials that are cheaper and get a decent amount of loads per sheet. (If anyone has better or cheaper options for detergent that's ecofriendly let me know, I'm only a college kid not a CEO lol)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/17/2024 4:24 PM
I didn't make my own, however, I decided to buy concentrates that only require adding my own water, and I think it can go a long way! I can use old spray containers that I have and repurpose them rather recycling them. In the end, less plastic is used because I am keeping my old bottles and reusing them!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Dig into Bioplastics
What did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/16/2024 8:00 PM
I learned that there is more than one type of bioplastic, as some are easily biodegradable with water, and some are not biodegradable at all, or require extensive exposure to heat. Also, the production process can actually pollute the environment more! I found a great article talking about bioplastics by Ghada Atiwesh (et al.)
I was not able to find anything with specific rules on bioplastics for VB nor Memphis (my other city residence), so I believe they are accepting of it? But normally if you're unsure you just throw it away
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Use a Reusable Mug
Did you encounter any resistance from your local coffee shop when trying to use your own mug? How did you navigate it, and how can you advocate from this to be a more commonplace practice in your community?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/11/2024 10:17 AM
I just started to make my own coffee rather than only going to a coffee shop. AND even better, its SO much cheaper in the long run, so I think I'll keep doing it. I feel that if I did try to use my own mug there would be health issues, so it's kind of problematic for the sake of others.

    • Paige Byrd's avatar
      Paige Byrd 7/11/2024 11:08 AM
Many coffee shops resist using my mug after covid, I often make my own coffee, or refill the cup multiple times at home.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Numbers Everywhere
Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/09/2024 12:42 PM
I wansn't really "surprised" perse, I figured it was something related to different types of plastic, but I did find that some items that people think are recyclable actually aren't accepted everywhere. With this new info, I can make the recycling process for waste employees easier (if that makes sense)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Study Buy Only What I Need
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/06/2024 12:38 PM
I have more in my saving account and I am more reliant on cooking my own meals rather than relying on fast food, which in turn is healthier. I also am using more of my clothes rather than buying something "in style"
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Multiple Wears Before Washing
In addition to helping clothes last longer, washing clothes less frequently also saves water by running the washing machine less often. As the climate and water situations change, what are some other ways both your household and our community could become more resilient?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/06/2024 12:34 PM
A way to save on water other than washing machines would include shorter showers and using a dishwasher for dishes. An easy way to adjust to shorter showers includes timing showers and slowly decreasing time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Embrace Imperfection
How has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?

    Dana Potter's avatar
    Dana Potter 7/04/2024 8:10 PM
It’s made me more conscious of what I am doing and how small things may be big impacts in the grand scheme of things. Though some things I can’t avoid, I’m more conscious of what I’m doing and I try to do the right things with plastics if I HAVE to use them, whether it be recycled art or ensuring it is IN the recycle bin :)
