Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 30 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Family + Pets
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 60 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Kitchen
Better Gum
Ever wonder how gum can stay chewy for so long without ever breaking down? Yep - it's plastic! This month, I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Study
Investigate Oil Subsidies
Our tax dollars are subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, making the cost of plastics artificially low and encouraging further plastics production. I will spend 20 minutes learning about oil subsidies and how I can advocate for their elimination.
Bathroom
See the Green
An estimated 50,000lbs (23,000kg) of contact lenses end up in sewage sludge in the US each year. This month, I will learn how to recycle used contact lenses and packaging or switch to wearing glasses instead.
Study
Recycle My Tech
There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.
Study
Print in Draft Mode
To extend the life of my ink cartridges, I will set my printer default to draft mode to use less ink or toner per print job.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
Whether I'm at work, on the go, or having food delivered, I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 30 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
Nearly all toothpaste tubes are made from multiple layers of different types of plastic and aluminum, making them impossible to recycle and destined for landfill. When it's time to replace my current toothpaste, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Participant Feed

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Plastic History BuffHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Amanda Reed 7/31/2024 7:40 PMWhat stood out to me the most was how practical and convenient the invention of single-use plastics was! Plastics play of vital role in society and in some cases switching away from plastics is hard. As such, I feel like exploring bio-based plastics, such as polysaccharide or engineering biodegradable plastics should be the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Clean the Dryer VentWhen was the last time you cleaned your dryer's air vents? Was it easier or more difficult than you anticipated?
Amanda Reed 7/31/2024 11:40 AMI cleaned my drier vents for the first time this weekend. It was much much more difficult than I anticipated mainly because I had never done it before. I had to look up multiple youtube videos and reddit posts to figure out how (still not sure how effectively I was able to do it). I was able to remove a significant amount of lint so I count it as a success. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Proper Clothing CareFast fashion depends on consumers buying into constantly changing trends, only wearing their clothes a handful of times, then tossing and buying more. How can you combat those influences to create a more sustainable wardrobe you'll love, value, and care for long-term?
Amanda Reed 7/31/2024 11:37 AMI always try my best to only purchase clothes I need and from places that would not be considered as fast fashion (like Shien). I also try to only purchase clothes that I know I can wear with other clothes I already own to ensure that they will be used consistently to and that I will value the item. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Numbers EverywhereWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Amanda Reed 7/31/2024 11:28 AMI was very surprised that there was such a small portion (~4) of the seven symbols could be actually recycled. It made me realize that I normally recycle based on "vibes". As such, this information is extremely helpful as it means I can start properly recycling the correct plastic items which ultimately saves energy and time (in sorting). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Follow the Chasing ArrowsRecycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?
Amanda Reed 7/31/2024 11:26 AMI think something helpful that I could do personally, is advocate for better signage in my condo. Currently, there is very little description of what the symbols mean at the garbage disposal which can lead to plastic products being wrongly disposed of. It would helpful to explicitly show what symbols can be recycled. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Recycle My TechBesides reusing materials, what are some other environmental, societal, and economical benefits of recycling our old electronics?
Amanda Reed 7/31/2024 11:23 AMBeside the material impacts, recycling electronics (depending on the intensity of the recycling process) can reduce the overall carbon footprint of the lifecycle since the disposal stage is removed/reduced. Economically, there is value added to product since the old electronic can be scraped (usually for profit). Overall, it helps encourage the reuse and recycle mindset which can translate into other products as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Investigate Oil SubsidiesDid anything you learned surprise you about plastics, fossil fuels, and oil subsidies? If we eliminate oil subsidies, what are some externalities we, our communities, and our society may face as a result? What's one way you'll advocate for social justice alongside these necessary environmental protections?
Amanda Reed 7/23/2024 4:57 AMSomething surprising was that removing reliance on fossil fuels to produce plastic doesn't fully resolve the issue. Eliminating oil subsidies could result in higher fuel prices, leading to increased costs for transportation and goods, and economic challenges for communities reliant on fossil fuel industries. These factors show the complexity of transitioning to sustainable energy sources. Thus, supporting affected communities and workers through job retraining programs and fair transition policies is also important to advocate for. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Eco DeodorantDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Amanda Reed 7/22/2024 7:15 AMSome of the side effects of using aluminum in deodorants include staining, irritation, overheating, and allergic reactions such as itching, hives, or swelling. I cannot.-
Alyssa Tyree 7/22/2024 7:42 AMI stopped a long time ago when I found out how bas it was for my eczema. I am happy to see that aluminum-free options are becoming more accessible!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Better GumWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Amanda Reed 7/22/2024 7:12 AMThe reason I chew gum was to freshen my mouth after eating lunch at work. One habit I could use to replace this is by brushing my teeth after lunch instead! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom See the GreenTake a moment to estimate how many disposable daily contacts you may have used over the years. What would be your impact now of switching to a contact brand with a longer lifespan?
Amanda Reed 7/22/2024 7:11 AMI switched to monthly contacts about 1 month after I got contacts so my overall impact is on the lower side. I would estimate I have used about 302 contacts in my life. Using monthly contacts from the start would have saved me 62 contacts. Reflecting on these numbers, it is impressive how high of the total contact usage came from just the 1 month on dailies.
