Bedroom

Proper Clothing Care

All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 30 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Dive Into Expiration Dates

Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 25 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Family + Pets

Thrifty Pets

I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Skip Plastic Bags

Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Is it trash...or a trash bag?

The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.

DAILY ACTIONS

Bedroom

Mend and Repair

We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Use a Reusable Mug

Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Plant a Garden

I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Use What You Have

The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Fill a Water Bottle

Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottles a day.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Start Composting

Composting isn't just good for soil! Composting your food scraps and other organic materials decreases your overall trash output, so you don't have to take the trash out as often and extend the life of your trash bags (i.e. use less plastic!). This month, I will start a compost collection at home, work, or school and avoid sending 1 pounds of food waste to landfill each day.

Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Ditch Dryer Sheets

Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Natural Fibers

When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Numbers Everywhere

The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Save Jars for Reuse

Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Dive Into Expiration Dates
Were you surprised by anything you learned about expiration dates in the US? Has it changed the way you make decisions around purchasing or discarding food?

    maryellen reek's avatar
    maryellen reek 7/31/2024 4:30 PM
I learned many dates are really suggestions or time to start using not expiration. Also I need to rotate items in my fridge more often
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Mend and Repair
Time to brag! Show us a photo of what you repaired and tell us about the experience!

    • We had shorts that got a hole from iron. I sewed a seam and they can still be used
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Numbers Everywhere
Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

    maryellen reek's avatar
    maryellen reek 7/31/2024 3:02 PM
It can help me look before I purchase items in the store. I can check the numbers to make sure the item can be recycled when it is finished or worn out
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Ditch Dryer Sheets
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

    maryellen reek's avatar
    maryellen reek 7/31/2024 3:01 PM
Certain plastics that leach microplastics can be harmful especially if in drinking bottles or cutlery
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Natural Fibers
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    maryellen reek's avatar
    maryellen reek 7/31/2024 2:58 PM
Natural fibers are much better on my skin than synthetic. They also wash better and seem to last longer
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Kitchen Is it trash...or a trash bag?
It's only "single-use" if it's only used once! What are some other creative ways to reuse unavoidable "single-use" items?

    maryellen reek's avatar
    maryellen reek 7/31/2024 2:57 PM
If I forget my water bottle I will buy a bottle then refill it as need during the day. I also use glass salsa jars to catch grease.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Use a Reusable Mug
Did you encounter any resistance from your local coffee shop when trying to use your own mug? How did you navigate it, and how can you advocate from this to be a more commonplace practice in your community?

    maryellen reek's avatar
    maryellen reek 7/31/2024 2:54 PM
It’s getting easier to bring my own to to fill. More coffee shops are accepting
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Use What You Have
Besides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?

    maryellen reek's avatar
    maryellen reek 7/28/2024 12:02 PM
Using what I have helps me to not just go out and buy more things. It also helps to reduce more items in my cabinet

    • Liz Loehe's avatar
      Liz Loehe 7/28/2024 1:49 PM
Also, in this challenge I've learned that many foods past their expiration dates are perfectly safe to use! That will reduce my trash/recycle when I review everything in the pantry!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Start Composting
Do an inventory of how much food waste you would save from going to the landfill if you start composting all of the time. What are the added benefits of having compost that is readily accessible?

    maryellen reek's avatar
    maryellen reek 7/28/2024 12:01 PM
The compost is a big help for our vegetable gardens. We love being able to reuse and also reduce landfill items.
