Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bedroom
Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 20 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Study
Divest and Reinvest
Does your savings account, retirement account, or investment account support the fossil fuel (and plastics) industry? This month, I will spend 45 minutes investigating where my investments (and where my bank's investments) are going, divest from the fossil fuel industry, and reinvest in ways that are more in alignment with my values.
Kitchen
Take Out Pro
When I'm ordering takeout, I will bring my own containers for the restaurant to fill.
Bedroom
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Kitchen
Choose Unpackaged Produce
I will purchase unpackaged produce at the grocery store or at the farmer's market.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Study
Borrowed Books
The average paperback book has the same carbon footprint of driving about 7 miles (11 km) in an average car. Instead of purchasing new books this month, I will borrow books, e-books, and/or audiobooks from my local library or library-affiliated apps, or host a book swap with my friends.
Kitchen
Meatless Meals
There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 2 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Investigate Oil Subsidies
Our tax dollars are subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, making the cost of plastics artificially low and encouraging further plastics production. I will spend 45 minutes learning about oil subsidies and how I can advocate for their elimination.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 20 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Community
Share my "why"
I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
Ditch the plastic jugs, artificial dyes, and harmful ingredients! When it's time to replace my current laundry detergent, I will switch to a natural laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
Andrea Robinson 7/31/2024 6:33 PMI don't stop at using reusable bags. When I run out of toilet paper, I use the plastic that it comes in as a makeshift trash bag! I'm always trying to find a way to repurpose plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenBesides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?
Andrea Robinson 7/31/2024 6:30 PMViewing the world as an opportunity to go zero waste trains your mind to think strategically. I work at a mini-storage facility, and recently a man abandoned his unit with a lot of water-softening equipment that nobody could use. We gave it away to someone in the industry. But the man also left something anyone could use - a huge amount of various forms of very good soap! It will probably take years to use it all up and give it away. But you learn to manage what seems impossible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Andrea Robinson 7/31/2024 6:20 PMI think the plastic wrapping serves the transportation industry and grocery chains. I always look for veggies that don't come in plastic bags and rarely break down and buy anything in plastic. However, a friend pointed out that most of the produce is shipped in plastic and unwrapped to put out on display in the store. So, the reflection question really hits on an important note -- who does all this plastic benefit, and why is that information hidden from view? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroomHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Andrea Robinson 7/31/2024 6:17 PMI have been doing things like saving all the plastic bags in my life and finding a second use for them. For example, a doggie treat bag may find itself in my freezer holding stinky shrimp tails until trash collection day. I use them for trash bags of all sizes and haven't had to buy any plastic bags for at least six months. But that's not all the plastic I try to reuse. I was very encouraged to know I'm not alone because most of my friends think I'm crazy. LOL -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyLibraries have immense benefits for society. What are some cool resources your library has that might not be as well-known as book borrowing? What are some ways you advocate for libraries and share these resources with your community?
Andrea Robinson 7/08/2024 5:20 PMI have not been using the library much in decades! I've been buying books online. My friend Peggy uses the library app to listen to books! So, thanks to her, I was inspired to get my library card renewed and can now listen to books or read them using the app. Thanks, Peggy! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchenAre there any restaurants in your area that offer reusable takeout containers? How can you advocate for this practice to become more mainstream in your city?
Andrea Robinson 7/08/2024 5:18 PMIn my state, I think it's illegal to bring your own takeout container. At least I know you can't bring your own plates to a place like Panda where the staff would have to handle it to dish up the food. The obvious reason is to avoid contaminating the kitchen area. When I go to other restaurants, I just bring my own. I'm not above smuggling one into the restaurant with an oversize purse.
