Start Composting
Composting isn't just good for soil! Composting your food scraps and other organic materials decreases your overall trash output, so you don't have to take the trash out as often and extend the life of your trash bags (i.e. use less plastic!). This month, I will start a compost collection at home, work, or school and avoid sending 1 pounds of food waste to landfill each day.

Fight Local Food Waste
Who says saving money and saving the planet don't go together? Using an app like Too Good To Go or Flashfood, I'll help rescue food from local bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste.
Bathroom
Plastic Free TP
Most toilet paper is wrapped in plastic #4, or low-density polyethylene - a thin plastic film that cannot be recycled back into more plastic film. To avoid this plastic wrapping, I will purchase toilet paper wrapped in paper instead, or use a reusable toilet paper option.
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 5 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Food
I will prepare my own pet food and/or treats to avoid plastic packaging.

Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 45 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.

Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Ruth Romero 7/19/2024 3:49 PMSome days I am more conscious about making choices, and, other days, I am just on autopilot --recycling everything all the time--driving friends nuts reminding them to reuse or recycle!--or simply not use plastics at all! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Fight Local Food WasteWhat was your experience like using these kinds of apps? How can you advocate for more businesses to participate?
Ruth Romero 7/13/2024 4:01 PMI am a co-chair of our local food pantry. I am working with one of the local, large chain stores in the Food Rescue program. Each week, our pantry receives food items that we, in turn, distribute to our clients each Monday. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Start CompostingDo an inventory of how much food waste you would save from going to the landfill if you start composting all of the time. What are the added benefits of having compost that is readily accessible?
Ruth Romero 7/13/2024 3:57 PMI don't do much gardening--but my neighbor has a compost pile that she tells me to use... I think I will take her up on that offer! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Homemade Pet FoodDoes making your own pet food seem like a habit you can keep up in the long term? What else can you do to reduce your use of plastic packaging that can come from taking care of your pet's needs?
Ruth Romero 7/13/2024 3:56 PMI am determined to make my own treats for my dogs--I have all the ingredients and the recipe... I already make some of their food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Go For a WalkWhat have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?
Ruth Romero 7/13/2024 3:55 PMMy daily walks are managing my 1 acre farm and tending to the property as well as to my farm critters and pets. Every time I "drag" myself outside, I feel so much better than when I was inside doing paperwork or cleaning! -
Ruth Romero 7/01/2024 6:36 PMi volunteer at a local food pantry. Today, I collected 10 plastic bottles (to recycle) and collected and flattened several dozen cardboard boxes that were taken to recycle. At home, I drank water in my metal (reuseable) cup all day!-
jade hilliard 7/31/2024 5:36 PMSounds like you're off to a great start Ruth!! You've inspired me to flatten all of our cardboard; I hate doing it so I've let about 7 boxes pile up.
