Community

Give Some Green Gratitude

Don't forget to celebrate the good! This month, I will give shout-outs on social media, my office's internal communication channels, or the Participant Feed to a local company, coworker, friend, or family member for their sustainable efforts.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Ditch Dryer Sheets

Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Learn about Environmental Justice

Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 15 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Clean the Dryer Vent

Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Meatless Meals

There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Whole Foods Meals

Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 1 whole foods-based meals at home each day.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Skip Plastic Bags

Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Clean Plate Club

When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Buy Only What I Need

I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Use The Dishwasher

Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Is it trash...or a trash bag?

The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Get Scrappy

Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Smart Seafood

Each year, approximately 2% of all fishing gear used globally is lost to the sea, becoming "ghost gear" and continuing to impact marine animals. This month, I will reduce my seafood consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Kitchen Is it trash...or a trash bag?
It's only "single-use" if it's only used once! What are some other creative ways to reuse unavoidable "single-use" items?

I try to buy in bulk if I can or skip the plastic bags for produce at the store. I am also excited to do more research and look into a bulk bin store for my non perishable items!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Skip Plastic Bags
It can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?

    Kenneth Rush's avatar
    Kenneth Rush 7/31/2024 4:23 PM
I keep extra reusable bags in my car and in my backs pack so that I always have one on me!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Meatless Meals
Share your favorite "Meatless Monday" recipe with us!

I don’t have a recipe exactly but I’ve found the impossible sausage and the beyond ground beef are excellent replacements, in most recipes I can’t even tell a difference!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Ditch Dryer Sheets
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

    Kenneth Rush's avatar
    Kenneth Rush 7/31/2024 4:22 PM
I have started using wool balls to reduce my single use needs, as I finish up with my detergent I will try and find other alternatives to use to try and reduce my footprint even more!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Learn about Environmental Justice
What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

    Kenneth Rush's avatar
    Kenneth Rush 7/31/2024 4:21 PM
To me it was very surprising how many environmental issues are also socio-economic or racial injustice issues. Many marginalized groups are more directly affected by environmental pollution and other issues.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Use The Dishwasher
Although the dishwasher saves time and water, some people enjoy washing dishes by hand for the mindfulness practice it can provide. What are some other ways you can practice mindfulness in the kitchen?

    Kenneth Rush's avatar
    Kenneth Rush 7/31/2024 1:40 PM
Personally I do not find washing dishes relaxing and am grateful that dishwashers are the better alternative. Whole meals and bringing things in to compost are small changes I am implementing to be more mindful in the kitchen!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Smart Seafood
What are some other ways you can protect marine environments in your daily life?

    Kenneth Rush's avatar
    Kenneth Rush 7/31/2024 1:38 PM
One of the big changes I have made is to switch to reef safe sunscreen!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Clean the Dryer Vent
When was the last time you cleaned your dryer's air vents? Was it easier or more difficult than you anticipated?

    Kenneth Rush's avatar
    Kenneth Rush 7/30/2024 12:52 PM
I cleaned out my dryer vent a few weeks ago, this is my first time doing so in my new apartment. I do not believe the previous tenant cleaned them ever!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Give Some Green Gratitude
There are many pros and cons to social media use in today's society. How can you mindfully use social media as a tool for connection and sharing your values with your community?

During this challenge it has been very uplifting and inspiring seeing everyone work towards more sustainable practices!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How difficult was this action for you? Is this something you'll be continuing after this challenge ends?

I have never composted or responsibly discarded my scraps but having the bins here at work make that much easier!
