Susie's actions
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Kitchen
Fight Local Food Waste
Who says saving money and saving the planet don't go together? Using an app like Too Good To Go or Flashfood, I'll help rescue food from local bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste.
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Kitchen
Give Veggie Scraps Another Life
Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.
Bathroom
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Kitchen
Plastic-Free Produce Storage
Produce doesn't need to be stored in plastic bags to stay fresh! I will learn how to properly store my produce to extend its freshness without single-use plastic.
Kitchen
Choose Unpackaged Produce
I will purchase unpackaged produce at the grocery store or at the farmer's market.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Food
I will prepare my own pet food and/or treats to avoid plastic packaging.

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Plastic-Free Produce StorageIn the United States, 30-40% of all edible food goes to waste. What are some other ways you can reduce food waste in your home?
Susie Santilena 7/24/2024 4:35 PMI found that processing my veggies in bulk as soon as I get them helps me use them up to avoid waste. For example, I cleaned and steamed green beans and kale all in the same day so I can eat them throughout the week before they went bad. Getting veggies I can snack on raw or that are already convenient to eat, like small cucumbers has also helped. If I have to cook it, there's a larger chance I won't eat it in time. If there are veggies I realize I won't get to cook, I give them away to my dad, who loves cooking and does it all the time. Then I visit him and help him eat them. :D -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Choose Unpackaged ProduceWhy do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?
Susie Santilena 7/24/2024 4:29 PMI think the plastic packaging is serving chemical companies. I don't think it's healthier to eat food that has been wrapped in plastic. I don't even think it helps preserve food to avoid food waste! I like to use glass jars and containers for storing loose fruits. I also get a lot of my produce from a local CSA (community supported agriculture) organization called CSU, Inc. I get many items in one paper bag that I reuse. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Use What You HaveBesides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?
Susie Santilena 7/09/2024 8:21 AMI think it can increase resourcefulness-- learning to work with what you have inspired creativity. It also reduces clutter and let's you enjoy things you might have forgotten you have.
