Allison's actions

Community

Advocate for Office Reusables

I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Go For a Walk

Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 30 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Study

Plastic History Buff

Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 8 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Learn about Plastic Production

Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Use What You Have

The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

COMPLETED 31
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Clean the Dryer Vent

Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Keep My Community Clean

In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Bedroom

Multiple Wears Before Washing

The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

Travel Toiletries

Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Learn about Plastic Production
What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

Not all great ideas turn out to be great ideas. Though it is very hard to see where a product can go in the future years, everything needs to be taken into account with the age old question, though you can, should you?

Agree! We often say "this will be better" when it's really just making a whole different mess.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Join a Cleanup Effort
What was the most unexpected piece of trash that was picked up during your local cleanup effort?

    Allison Schwartz's avatar
    Allison Schwartz 7/31/2024 12:16 PM
A dirty diaper and a rusty pipe
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Advocate for Office Reusables
What are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?

    Allison Schwartz's avatar
    Allison Schwartz 7/31/2024 12:15 PM
We can be an example for other businesses and organizations in the community. This puts in the spotlight and for something like this, that is a really good thing.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Embrace Imperfection
How has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?

    Allison Schwartz's avatar
    Allison Schwartz 7/31/2024 12:14 PM
More mentally than anything, when you embrace imperfection it also allows you to give yourself some more freedoms. In a world that is so rigid sometimes, this gives a break for which we really need.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Use What You Have
Besides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?

    Allison Schwartz's avatar
    Allison Schwartz 7/31/2024 12:13 PM
There is less waste, less cleanup, and less worry. Win

It also makes us think twice about buying as a whole. The more you buy- the more clutter there is both physically and mentally. You have to think about cleaning, storage, maintenance, and there are times where an item just isn't worth all of that work.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Go For a Walk
What have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?

    Allison Schwartz's avatar
    Allison Schwartz 7/31/2024 12:13 PM
Some walks are better than others and I definitely feel the best walk is an early morning walk on a beach while on vacation. Though we cannot be on vacation or at the beach all the time, just breathing fresh air and putting in some physical effort makes you feel good and allows you that piece of cake or pie. Treat your self!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Allison Schwartz's avatar
    Allison Schwartz 7/31/2024 12:11 PM
For sure it shows how some people just don't care about the world around them and gives more incentive to educate, But sometimes there is a plethora of garbage because people do not secure their trash and animals get into it and spread it around. Again, more opportunities for education.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Multiple Wears Before Washing
In addition to helping clothes last longer, washing clothes less frequently also saves water by running the washing machine less often. As the climate and water situations change, what are some other ways both your household and our community could become more resilient?

    Allison Schwartz's avatar
    Allison Schwartz 7/31/2024 12:10 PM
If you think about it, unless you drop food or roll in dirt, or sweat like a pig in your clothes (not including underwear...those are one time wears before being washed), there is no reason to wash them. It takes up water, and your time.
