Greenwashing Pro
Greenwashing can fool even the most experienced eco-advocate. This month, I will spend 30 minutes learning what greenwashing is, how to spot it, and what I can do about it.

Recycle My Tech
There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 1 whole foods-based meals at home each day.

Meatless Meals
There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 2 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.

Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.

Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Recycle My TechBesides reusing materials, what are some other environmental, societal, and economical benefits of recycling our old electronics?
John Shaffer 7/31/2024 7:35 PMLess waste in the landfills - that waste being a particularly long term waste product. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
John Shaffer 7/31/2024 7:30 PMStands to reason in an age of "new", and "disposable", we can never escape plastics - they are in virtually all manufactured goods today. We used to worry about quality and durability - things made to last. Those times are no more and we are stuck with moving forward with plastics as part of our daily lives and do the best we can to limit our use of them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Declutter SustainablyCompared to your previous experiences with decluttering, how was this experience with sustainable decluttering different?
John Shaffer 7/30/2024 7:39 PMMuch the same as always. We regularly donate clothes and household items to our church thrift shop which sells items very cheaply or distributes them to people in need in the community. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Meatless MealsShare your favorite "Meatless Monday" recipe with us!
John Shaffer 7/09/2024 8:47 PMEggplant parmesan no meat and very tasty - eggplant, fresh tomatoes and bell peppers - chopped, marinara, parmesan cheese, bake until cheese melts. -
John Shaffer 7/06/2024 8:55 PMPlastic surrounds us every day - our cars, the building materials in our homes and apartments, even the computer I'm typing this on is plastic. Every little bit we can do to curb its use will help. A big step forward that often gets neglected is to reclaim-restore-reuse. Old tools, furniture, bikes, all sorts of major things useful in life and all plastic-free, can be brought back to life with just a little bit of imagination and elbow grease.
