Mary Beth's actions
Kitchen
Smart Seafood
Each year, approximately 2% of all fishing gear used globally is lost to the sea, becoming "ghost gear" and continuing to impact marine animals. This month, I will reduce my seafood consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.
Kitchen
Meatless Meals
There are many benefits to enjoying meatless meals - including reducing our plastic footprint. Most meats and dairy products are packaged in plastic, so this month, I will reduce my animal product consumption and enjoy 1 vegetarian or vegan meals each day.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
Ditch the plastic jugs, artificial dyes, and harmful ingredients! When it's time to replace my current laundry detergent, I will switch to a natural laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Community
Write Letters, Emails or Sign Petitions
I will write or sign 1 letters, emails or petitions per day to advocate for plastic-free or planet-friendly policies.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 25 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 5 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Kitchen
Start Composting
Composting isn't just good for soil! Composting your food scraps and other organic materials decreases your overall trash output, so you don't have to take the trash out as often and extend the life of your trash bags (i.e. use less plastic!). This month, I will start a compost collection at home, work, or school and avoid sending 1 pounds of food waste to landfill each day.
Study
Better Highlighters
Instead of buying new plastic highlighters, I will simply use colored pencils instead for all of my highlighting needs.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Get Scrappy
Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.
Bathroom
Bidet All Day
The average American uses about 141 rolls of toilet paper each year, most of which is wrapped in plastic film. To cut down on my toilet paper usage, I will install a bidet in my bathroom.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
Don't forget to celebrate the good! This month, I will give shout-outs on social media, my office's internal communication channels, or the Participant Feed to a local company, coworker, friend, or family member for their sustainable efforts.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Community
Share My Actions
One of the best ways we can create change in our communities is simply by talking about it! This month, I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Dig into BioplasticsWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Mary Beth Sills 7/31/2024 11:31 AMI always thought bioplastics had no negative impacts, boy was I wrong and that was what surprised me! Our city doesn't have waste management, it is handled via a private company and yes they are accepted! -
Mary Beth Sills 7/30/2024 9:14 AMI can't believe there are only 48 hours left? Where did the challenge go, but man has it opened my eyes and mind! I find myself looking for more sustainable options...and eating fewer meat-based meals!-
Brian Albaum 7/30/2024 9:23 AMTime flies when you are having fun [reducing single-use plastics]!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Write Letters, Emails or Sign PetitionsHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?
Mary Beth Sills 7/30/2024 9:12 AMIt seems like we hang on to the ideals of "we have always done it this way" and it isn't working. Thinking creatively or outside of the box gives us fresh ideas to fix existing problems and gets us out of a rut! -
Mary Beth Sills 7/29/2024 12:27 PMBaked mac n cheese for lunch! Yummy! -
Mary Beth Sills 7/26/2024 1:15 PMAs this month has progressed I have found myself looking more deep at packaging and trying to find materials that can be recycled even more than I did before!

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Mary Beth Sills 7/22/2024 12:05 PMAs a cat mom I didn't realize just how much of my cat's supplies (food containers, bags, etc) could be recycled. I have been more conscious about recycling what I can!
