Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Study

Borrowed Books

The average paperback book has the same carbon footprint of driving about 7 miles (11 km) in an average car. Instead of purchasing new books this month, I will borrow books, e-books, and/or audiobooks from my local library or library-affiliated apps, or host a book swap with my friends.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Study

Say No to Styrofoam

Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Study

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

Use What You Have

The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

Sustainable Suds

In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Natural Corks

Natural cork is a sustainable, renewable, and biodegradable material, but many wineries are switching to synthetic corks for their wine bottles. Using a database like CORKWatch, I will choose wines with a natural cork closure, and properly compost or recycle them after enjoying my wine.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Study

Numbers Everywhere

The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Multiple Wears Before Washing

The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Use The Dishwasher

Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Bedroom

Mend and Repair

We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Choose Reusable Food Storage

I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Give Some Green Gratitude

Don't forget to celebrate the good! This month, I will give shout-outs on social media, my office's internal communication channels, or the Participant Feed to a local company, coworker, friend, or family member for their sustainable efforts.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Give Some Green Gratitude
There are many pros and cons to social media use in today's society. How can you mindfully use social media as a tool for connection and sharing your values with your community?

    Grace Siu's avatar
    Grace Siu 7/24/2024 6:32 AM
I try to only follow people on social media who I am friends with in real life, and organizations that I support. I used to follow a lot of "lifestyle influencers," but I found myself stuck in a cycle of buying things I didn't need because of how it was advertised to me. After doing a purge of who I followed, I found that my social media was a lot more enjoyable to use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Choose Reusable Food Storage
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Grace Siu's avatar
    Grace Siu 7/17/2024 11:55 AM
I like to bring reusable cups when I go to a coffee shop or tupperware when I go to a restaurant and think I might have leftovers. I also like to use glass jars or tupperware to store crafty stuff too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Mend and Repair
Time to brag! Show us a photo of what you repaired and tell us about the experience!

I don't have a photo, but I had a stack of clothes that I was saving to fix. A couple dresses with rips, some pants that were too long, and a tank top that needed the straps shortened. I love sewing, I think it's such a fun skill, because within 10 minutes I can completely change a item of clothing and add it into my closet! I learned how to sew in middle school home ec and haven't stopped since then!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Sustainable Suds
What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Grace Siu's avatar
    Grace Siu 7/09/2024 6:12 AM
My favorite reason for using bar soap and hair products is that I can take them in my carry-on while flying and not have to worry about size restrictions! On the same note, I used to always have problems with my shampoo and conditioner exploding when flying, and that's no longer a worry.

I use The Earthling Company shampoo and conditioner bars and love the scent and the lather!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Borrowed Books
Libraries have immense benefits for society. What are some cool resources your library has that might not be as well-known as book borrowing? What are some ways you advocate for libraries and share these resources with your community?

    Grace Siu 7/05/2024 9:13 AM
One really cool service that Baltimore County Public Libraries offers is free digitization of physical media. You can bring in photos or tapes and get it preserved digitally, which typically has a huge cost at a private business! I participate in summer reading every year, and always try to recruit new people to join through BCPL.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Use The Dishwasher
Although the dishwasher saves time and water, some people enjoy washing dishes by hand for the mindfulness practice it can provide. What are some other ways you can practice mindfulness in the kitchen?

    Grace Siu's avatar
    Grace Siu 7/02/2024 6:36 AM
I practice mindfulness when I'm cooking in the kitchen. Giving myself an hour to cook dinner allows me to focus on connecting with myself and the food I am about to eat.

Do you have a favorite recipe while cooking, or it varies?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Use What You Have
Besides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?

    Grace Siu's avatar
    Grace Siu 7/01/2024 7:10 AM
By using things we already own, we learn that we don't constantly have to be buying new (and what we perceive to be 'better') things. For example, the face wash I have right now works perfectly fine, so I don't need to buy new face wash when I go to the store just because the packaging is cute.

Super excited to participate in Plastic Free July! It will definitely encourage me to be more conscious of how I can even further reduce my plastic use.
