Use What You Have

The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Clean Plate Club

When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Sustainable Suds

In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Use The Dishwasher

Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Kitchen

Go Strawless

Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 1 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.

Say No to Styrofoam

Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.

Take the pre-survey!

Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

Fill a Water Bottle

Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottles a day.

Host a Watch Party

I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.

COMPLETED

Skip Plastic Bags

Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.

COMPLETED 1

Discover Together

I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.

Borrowed Books

The average paperback book has the same carbon footprint of driving about 7 miles (11 km) in an average car. Instead of purchasing new books this month, I will borrow books, e-books, and/or audiobooks from my local library or library-affiliated apps, or host a book swap with my friends.

Print in Draft Mode

To extend the life of my ink cartridges, I will set my printer default to draft mode to use less ink or toner per print job.

Better Highlighters

Instead of buying new plastic highlighters, I will simply use colored pencils instead for all of my highlighting needs.

Eco Deodorant

Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.

Recycle My Tech

There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.

UNCOMPLETED

Mend and Repair

We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.

Catch Those Microfibers

When we wash our clothes, the heat and friction causes our clothes to wear down, releasing microfibers into the water stream. To combat and prevent these microfibers as much as possible, in addition to following best laundry practices, I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Clean Plate Club
How easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?

    Abi Stewart's avatar
    Abi Stewart 7/31/2024 11:42 AM
I loved this swap! It's amazing how easy the transition was and how much waste it eliminates!
Plus it's a far more fun fashionable choice! I love having a cute soap dispenser vs a plastic branded bottle :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Use What You Have
Besides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?

    Abi Stewart's avatar
    Abi Stewart 7/31/2024 11:38 AM
This mentality focuses you on what you are purchasing/using, and where they come from, and where they will go after.
When you focus on not being wasteful, you start finding ways to reuse items or fix items to lengthen the life of that item. This helps you appreciate what goes into the creation of this item, and it makes you want to care for your things better and not damage them or be destructive with them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Catch Those Microfibers
Which microfiber solution did you choose? How has it changed your laundry routine?

    Abi Stewart's avatar
    Abi Stewart 7/31/2024 11:15 AM
I've adopted a few ways to lessen the amount of shed microfibers in my laundry:
    1. I never wash on Hot, I only use cold
    2. I do not use bleach
    3. I do not use fabric softener
    4. I use a delicates bag for my microfiber items so any shed microfibers are caught in the bag and not shed onto other clothing.

Time to brag! Show us a photo of what you repaired and tell us about the experience!

I actually supported local business and had some clothes tailored by our Local Tailor! Instead of buying new clothes, I had our local business fix it, and it was better than ever! :D I don't have a photo unfortunately, but it was two pairs of overalls. :) Now when I order clothes that need adjustments, I always take them to Michiko downtown :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Recycle My Tech
Besides reusing materials, what are some other environmental, societal, and economical benefits of recycling our old electronics?

    Abi Stewart's avatar
    Abi Stewart 7/29/2024 11:19 AM
    1. Recycling creates jobs for the community.
    2. Recycling technology actually involves data destruction methods that help protect sensitive information stored on old devices, preventing potential identity theft and data breaches.
    3. Recycling old technology supports a full circle economy, where products are reused, repaired, and recycled rather than discarded. This reduces overall consumption and waste.

I'm to the point that I've started siphoning through trash cans to make sure every last bottle makes it in to the recycle bin ;P
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Family + Pets Discover Together
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Abi Stewart's avatar
    Abi Stewart 7/28/2024 11:55 AM
What concerns me the most is the lack of awareness! I live in a city where many people don't believe in recycling or understand that it IS happening and we DO have processes and abilities to do so. Getting the word out is crucial to changing the world. Explaining how possible it really is, and petitioning locally for processes to change and accessibility to improve is so important! We must start locally so we can grow this initiative globally! Individual > Community > City > State > Country > World!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Print in Draft Mode
What are some other ways you can extend the life of your printer ink cartridges?

    Abi Stewart's avatar
    Abi Stewart 7/26/2024 3:50 PM
-Only print what is necessary-send emails or do online posts if/when possible. This not only saves ink, it saves paper.
-Only print in black and white.
    -Avoid printing images
    -Print in smaller font
-Keep ink cartridges in their original packaging until you need it, so that it's preserved longer.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Better Highlighters
What did you think of this action? Is this something you think you can turn into a long-term habit to avoid plastic highlighters?

    Abi Stewart's avatar
    Abi Stewart 7/26/2024 3:31 PM
This is a very doable solution that I would've never thought of! It's such a genius easy fix that is a very good long-term solution, and coming from an office, could save SO much plastic from being thrown away here!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Borrowed Books
Libraries have immense benefits for society. What are some cool resources your library has that might not be as well-known as book borrowing? What are some ways you advocate for libraries and share these resources with your community?

Our library has a program where if you own a library card, you can eDownload everything from magazines, to books, tv, movies, comics, and audiobooks! These will download to your account and you can view everything online. This saves in so much paper! I constantly encourage people to read, I'm a huge reader! The library is an amazing resource and one we're lucky to have!
