Debbi's actions
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but combine with fat to create massive clogs. I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Bathroom
See the Green
I will recycle used contact lenses and packaging.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Catch Those MicrofibersWhich microfiber solution did you choose? How has it changed your laundry routine?
Debbi Stone 7/29/2023 9:03 AMI haven’t purchased a microfiber solution yet…but I will! ! It’s never too late. 😀 -
Debbi Stone 7/27/2023 9:01 AMWe've kept over 2,700 plastic bottles from ending up in landfills, and we've also kept over 2,000 plastic containers out of play. Great job, everyone...and we're still going! -
Debbi Stone 7/24/2023 10:38 AMOne week to go! Next Monday is 7/31, and we can all rally to the finish line. Let's all keep inspiring each other, too! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Debbi Stone 7/23/2023 4:15 AMI just learned about thredUP! https://www.thredup.com/. I’d never really considered the true cost of fast fashion, but there are great alternatives to this buying pattern. -
Debbi Stone 7/21/2023 10:06 AMLet's keep it up! I see a lot of folks doing a great job checking in...but you can even go back a few days and check in if you missed a day or two. There's also still plenty of time to keep going, learning along with others and inspiring each other to make a difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Debbi Stone 7/20/2023 1:47 PMOne of the main benefits of natural fibers is that they break down a lot easier than synthetic versions (unless infused with a lot of non-natural elements and filler), and in a lot of cases, the non-natural components never really break down at all. It's definitely much better for the environment to stick to the things that are already a natural part of our world! -
Debbi Stone 7/19/2023 4:03 PMKeep it going, everyone!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Balloons BlowHad you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?
Debbi Stone 7/18/2023 5:08 AMI definitely share with people that balloons are harmful to the environment, and I try to give specific reasons why...finding that the impact on wildlife makes the greatest impression. It connects with people in an emotional way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Green BeautyHow can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?
Debbi Stone 7/18/2023 5:06 AMSometimes, telling people about the importance of reducing packaging is effective, but more often, giving people specific examples of how (and where to find specific things) can make an even bigger difference. The easier we make it, the more likely it is that we can encourage others to change some habits that will have a positive environmental impact.-
Krystina Jarvis 7/18/2023 7:07 AMAgreed! Often times the "how" is just as important as the "why." We're busy people!
