Vanessa's actions
Bathroom
A Greener Shower
Most conventional shower curtain liners are made from polyvinyl chloride (or PVC), which contains chlorine, phthalates, and plasticizers, and typically need replaced often. When it's time to replace my shower curtain liner, I will replace it with a plastic-free option and research the best ways to care for it.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 15 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Bedroom
Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 30 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 15 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 15 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Family + Pets
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 1 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Kitchen
Is it trash...or a trash bag?
The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
Bottled water corporations make plastic bottles, not water. If the tap water in my area is safe for consumption, I will use a reusable bottle instead and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottles a day.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.

Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!

Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 60 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Bathroom
Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Even when advertised as "flushable" these wipes don't break down in sewer systems, but instead combine with fat to create massive clogs. This month, I will find alternatives to using disposable wipes.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Study
Greenwashing Pro
Greenwashing can fool even the most experienced eco-advocate. This month, I will spend 30 minutes learning what greenwashing is, how to spot it, and what I can do about it.
Study
Borrowed Books
The average paperback book has the same carbon footprint of driving about 7 miles (11 km) in an average car. Instead of purchasing new books this month, I will borrow books, e-books, and/or audiobooks from my local library or library-affiliated apps, or host a book swap with my friends.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Vanessa Tan 7/31/2024 2:07 PMPlastic-free July flew by! Let's keep up the mindful practices even when the challenge is over!-
David Woon 7/31/2024 2:12 PMI agree! I'll do my best to stay away from single-use plastics and repurpose some of the items that I no longer use.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Eco DeodorantDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Vanessa Tan 7/31/2024 12:05 PMI don't think I have experienced any effects related to breast cancer, kidney disease, bone disease, or memory loss - though some of these severe side effects of aluminum deodorants have few scientific evidence. -
Vanessa Tan 7/25/2024 5:51 AMIt's pretty cool when we do this plastic-free challenge together. SL saw me using a straw and called my attention on it. It was glass and reusable but it's nice how we can encourage and keep each other accountable. -
Vanessa Tan 7/23/2024 8:08 AMOnly about a week left in this challenge!!! Let's keep going strong team! and hopefully the habits we've been practicing don't stop after July.-
Amanda Zaino 7/23/2024 8:23 AMYeah!! Great work everyone!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Dive Into Expiration DatesWere you surprised by anything you learned about expiration dates in the US? Has it changed the way you make decisions around purchasing or discarding food?
Vanessa Tan 7/15/2024 12:48 PMOne of the grocery stores I go to (and probably others) still sells items that are past the best-before date, with a discount. I'm surprised it's not more regulated, but it's also good to prevent food waste as long as the user knows it might not be as fresh. -
Vanessa Tan 7/15/2024 12:43 PMTrying not to buy things I don't need and reducing the amount of packaging I consume, my garbage bins have been going out with less garbage on collection day. Saves me time in taking out the garbage lol -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Plant a GardenBesides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?
Vanessa Tan 7/13/2024 8:48 AMHaving my own herb plants at home gives me the assurance of how my herbs are grown - no pesticides or other harmful things. It's also great for sharing herbs with family and friends. You don't realize how fast they grow!-
Shaun Lee 7/13/2024 10:35 PMYou've gotta share how to get them started. Rosemary, basil and tomatoes never make it past 2 weeks with me :( -
Julie Mapes 7/13/2024 8:58 AMHi Vanessa, I have heard that they often taste better as well!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Discover TogetherWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Vanessa Tan 7/12/2024 12:19 PMThe most concerning thing for me is that we don't even realize how a lot of the "small" things we do can affect the planet. Both in a bad or good way! So small initiatives like this eco-challenge is a step in the right direction of helping each of us realize the impact we can have on the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Rethink ReturnsHow has learning what happens to returns influenced how you make purchasing decisions?
Vanessa Tan 7/09/2024 8:50 AMI learned that only a very small percent of returned items are resold as new. Return policies, like free shipping, is often a dealmaker or dealbreaker when I buy things, especially online. When I want to buy something, I will try to see the item in-store before deciding to buy it. If I don't like it, I will see if I can gift it to someone who wants it or find another use, as returning it is essentially sending it to the landfill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Sunshine BleachedThe simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?
Vanessa Tan 7/09/2024 8:42 AMI can practice mindfulness when I wash the dishes, fold the laundry, and water the plants. It's easy to put a show on the background while I do these things, but it's also nice to do them quietly and appreciate the simple things.-
Shaun Lee 7/10/2024 12:00 PMCompletely agree with this sentiment. Having little attention span myself, I often get lost in the simple things like watering the plants and cleaning the aquarium which are actually very calming things without any background show/entertainment.
