Ugh! Went for my annual eye exam while they were receiving a shipment of frames. Each case individually wrapped in plastic.

I recently had to have a little mole removed from my arm (nothing serious) -- but was amazed at all the waste. I expected to see lots of individual wrappings to keep things sterile at the doctor's office. But I literally was unable to find a box of gauze pads where the pads were not individually packaged. Or paper tape that isn't packaged in plastic (what's wrong with a little cardboard box for this?)!

Oh, and your health-related PSA: get your skin cancer screening done!

My mother in law is taking medications using a PICC line right now. We have been shocked by the amount of plastic waste. Totally get that the tubing and little medicine balls need to be plastic. But does each ball have to come in it's own bag, with three bags on balls in another bag, and four bags of bags of balls in bags in another bag, in a bag with an ice pack, in yet another bag?!?! YIKES. :(

Things like these examples are why I feel so strongly that we can all only do our best. We can't fix all of this on our own. We need to vote with our dollar - yes! - but we also need to pushandpushandpush for that systematic shift!

      Glad you're ok :)

Here's a question: during the pandemic, did fast food restaurants have a decline in sales? And if so did that lead to a decline in use of single use plastics?

Yea I was reading that this pandemic has been really, really bad for waste reduction and there has been a HUGE  spike in plastic use and littering :(

Hmm. I feel like overall throughout the pandemic, especially in food service, the use of single use plastic has gone up. Lots of gloves, straws, cups, takeaway containers, cutlery.. which is definitely sad to think about.

The happiness you feel when a friend gives you a cute little bottle of hand sanitizer.....and the disappointment when you realize it is full of microplastic beads.

(Is it bad that I want Allie to send me a daily reminder to check in?)

Thanks, Allie, for the reminder to log in each day! If I don't do it first thing, I tend to forget.

It can definitely be tough to remember! But the feed is so fun this year. Logging in and reading all of the comments and seeing our impact racking up is a good morale booster!

I don't know about in your neighborhood, but in our neighborhood I wish they'd find another way to celebrate holidays other than using fireworks. What suggestions do you have? My dogs thank you.

A few years ago at Fort Monroe they did a laser show that also involved projections of fireworks onto some of the structures there. I thought it was an AWESOME idea but it didn't seem to catch on. Plus might not be super practical for people to do at their houses I guess. Not that fireworks are super practical either!
