Gillian Lang 7/31/2024 2:35 PMThis was an interesting resource I found. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/plastic-pollution-by-country.
"The United States, as well as other countries like Canada and the U.K., is known for exporting collected plastic waste to countries in Asia, where it is then recycled or disposed of, often improperly. This can create a distorted impression of how much waste is actually being generated by both the sending and receiving countries."

Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 5 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 5 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Study
Divest and Reinvest
Does your savings account, retirement account, or investment account support the fossil fuel (and plastics) industry? This month, I will spend 5 minutes investigating where my investments (and where my bank's investments) are going, divest from the fossil fuel industry, and reinvest in ways that are more in alignment with my values.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Investigate Oil Subsidies
Our tax dollars are subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, making the cost of plastics artificially low and encouraging further plastics production. I will spend 5 minutes learning about oil subsidies and how I can advocate for their elimination.
Bedroom
Multiple Wears Before Washing
The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 2 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Study
Recycle My Tech
There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Choose Unpackaged Produce
I will purchase unpackaged produce at the grocery store or at the farmer's market.
Bedroom
Reuse old furniture
Not to worry about matching bedroom furniture but more focus on lifetime of how long things last
Family + Pets
Get rid of glitter
Teach my little ones about how microplastics can effect craft time
Bathroom
Bidet All Day
The average American uses about 141 rolls of toilet paper each year, most of which is wrapped in plastic film. To cut down on my toilet paper usage, I will install a bidet in my bathroom.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bathroom
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Kitchen
Use The Dishwasher
Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
Even just one to-go coffee or tea a week adds up to 52 trashed cups in a year! I will avoid sending 4 disposable cups to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or travel cup.
Bathroom
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 5 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyDid anything you learned surprise you about plastics, fossil fuels, and oil subsidies? If we eliminate oil subsidies, what are some externalities we, our communities, and our society may face as a result? What's one way you'll advocate for social justice alongside these necessary environmental protections?
Mandi Townzen 7/31/2024 12:01 PMI know they mentioned a lot of the growth in fossil fuel plastics being marketed overseas due to US not growing as much that way as it is overseas. What do you think is the cultural differences that leads the U.S. to be rethinking their mindset more than some overseas areas? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhat did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?
Mandi Townzen 7/31/2024 11:48 AMI feel like there is a lot of room for greenwashing within the bio plastic field as it grows and everyone should do research on each product -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Mandi Townzen 7/31/2024 11:44 AMIt seems a lot of the beginning single use plastics were introduced as a way to make life easier like not having to wash silverware and peoples lives being more on the go with a lot more women entering the workforce as well, that coupled with cheaper for companies to upkeep a lot of time fed into consumerism instead of having companies commit to quality longer lasting products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Mandi Townzen 7/31/2024 11:37 AMI think it’s been an almost too complicated system if the goal is for the average Joe to invest in recycling there is a good amount you have to look into to see what and how things should actually be recycled-

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudyWhere we choose to spend (and invest) our money is one of the most powerful ways we can shape the future we want. What are some other ways you can ensure that your money is being used in ways that align with your personal values?
Mandi Townzen 7/31/2024 11:36 AMI think in this day and age you just have to really put in the time to research what companies support in order to align them with your values if that is important to you. -

Mandi Townzen 7/30/2024 10:10 AMWhy don’t the Olympics build an Olympic village in one central area where they always are so cities are creating such large footprints hosting them? -
Mandi Townzen 7/28/2024 8:41 PMI never thought about wearing clothes multiple times between washes as being a “green” practice before this round of plastic free July but it does make sense when explained. It is actually wild to me that people actually wash jeans every single wear.-
Mary Hanks 7/28/2024 8:57 PMMe too! That just weakens the fibers and causes the garments to wear out quickly. Also, people use hot water when they don't need to, and often they add too much detergent. Then again, everything I've been reading about fast fashion makes it sound like people only wear clothes items a few times before discarding them. I don't understand that attitude either.
