Sara's actions
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Bedroom
Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 30 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 30 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
Each year, the International Coastal Cleanup reports that plastic straws and stirrers are one of the Top 10 most-collected items from their cleanups (top 5 in the US!). I will keep 1 plastic straws and/or stirrers out of the landfill each day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Use The Dishwasher
Using your dishwasher doesn't just save water! I will use my dishwasher whenever possible to extend the life of my sponges and dish cloths, and shed less microfibers from them.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Bathroom
A Greener Shower
Most conventional shower curtain liners are made from polyvinyl chloride (or PVC), which contains chlorine, phthalates, and plasticizers, and typically need replaced often. When it's time to replace my shower curtain liner, I will replace it with a plastic-free option and research the best ways to care for it.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
Ditch the plastic jugs, artificial dyes, and harmful ingredients! When it's time to replace my current laundry detergent, I will switch to a natural laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 15 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 1 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Study
Recycle My Tech
There's value in our old electronics! This month, I will properly recycle any old laptops, tablets, cell phones, or other electronics I have lying around so the raw materials can be reused and reduce demand for virgin materials - thereby also protecting critical wildlife habitat for animals such as gorillas and forest elephants.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Declutter SustainablyCompared to your previous experiences with decluttering, how was this experience with sustainable decluttering different?
Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 4:12 PMI belong to a Buy Nothing group in Waynedale on Facebook. People post Asks, Gifts, and Gratitude. I like to participate in this group. No one is allowed to charge anything. Participants post just about anything on the site from used clothes, partial packages of items that are new, such as diapers that have been outgrown, and even services. I like to post clothes, pet items, furniture, tickets for experiences, etc. People also request things they need, especially things they might only need a small amount of or would like to borrow. It's a really great concept and great way to meet neighbors. I really need to participate more, especially in the gifting department! I'm currently doing some purging, so I'm going to strive and put items on the group and offer them to folks who really need them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Ditch Dryer SheetsOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 4:04 PMJust about everything made out of plastic could be potentially harmful to humans. It pollutes our lands and waterways as it enters the ecosystem. It gets into the food chain and eventually into us.-

Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:26 PMHearing that some people have tested positive for microplastics in their bodies gives me the heeby geebies!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Rethink ReturnsHow has learning what happens to returns influenced how you make purchasing decisions?
Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 4:01 PMBefore doing some research on returns, I didn't realize how much is just thrown away or wasted. I would rather donate the item or give it to a friend than waste it, even if I took a financial loss. I definitely think through purchases more and try to get clothes and other items in brick and mortar stores where I can try on or see the items in real life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Sunshine BleachedThe simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?
Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 3:55 PMI have been doing yoga lately and I've started to really enjoy it. I do it pretty regularly in the past, but got away from it. I'm hoping to get back into it because it allows some me time and self-pampering, both really great things to have as a mom.-
Brittany Murphy 7/31/2024 3:59 PMI need to get back into yoga too, i did it in college for credit and kept it up for a bit before stopping. It really helped my back pain and self reflection!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 3:53 PMI try my best, but I know I can't avoid plastics all together. Often it is out of my hands. I hope other alternatives come on the market soon. I'm always looking out for ways I can reduce my plastic usage. Embracing imperfection has helped me to not feel guilty all the time about the plastics I do use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Save Jars for ReuseWhat's the most creative way you've reused a jar in your home?
-
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:05 PMI propogate all of my plants in glass pasta sauce jars. :) -
Brittany Murphy 7/31/2024 4:03 PMOooh i hadnt thought of that! Mine is holding pens and paintbrushes for craft nights!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Skip Plastic BagsIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 3:50 PMI keep them in my car and I even have some that roll up really small that I can keep in a purse or pocket.-
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:35 PMI have a few of those plastic-like Vera Bradley bags with the really good handles--they go back in the trunk of my car after I unload the groceries. -
Brittany Murphy 7/31/2024 4:04 PMI just got one from work that folds up and comes with its own zippered case and carabiner! So convenient! -
Larissa B 7/31/2024 3:51 PMIve seen the roll up ones! Game changer for sure!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Whole Foods MealsShare your favorite whole foods-based meal recipe with us!
Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 3:49 PMI love to cook and so I'm obsessively collecting recipes to try all the time. Something else I've been doing is using Hello Fresh on occasion. A recent recipe I really enjoyed was chicken breasts with panko crumbs, seasoning, and cheese, roasted green beans, corn on the cob, and garlic bread.-
Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:37 PMI love to cook but working an 11-hour shift is tough sometimes. One of my favorite meals is on a sheet pan--chicken or bratwurst, green veggie down the middle, something like sliced potatoes on the other side, and a sauce to go over everything. It all goes in the oven for ~30-45 minutes and dinner is done! -
Brittany Murphy 7/31/2024 4:05 PMYesssss! My boyfriend and i got these for the last year and i stockpiled them into their own recipe book! They are so quick and so many use the same ingredients!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Go StrawlessHave you noticed any changes in your community around plastic straws as awareness of plastic pollution has grown over the last few years?
Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 3:45 PMI have noticed more servers asking if I would like a straw, instead of just assuming and putting it in the drink or on the table. I used to research sea turtles in Costa Rica and I personally know the guy who famously pulled the straw out of the sea turtle's nostril, so it hits home for me. I was at Applebee's once and the server noticed my sea turtle shirt and said, "I'm guessing you don't want a straw?" I wish more servers would ask or at least not automatically give straws.-
Brittany Murphy 7/31/2024 3:51 PMMy first job was serving and hostessing for 9 years! It was interesting how things changed and evolved. We started asking if customers wanted a straw and it was a big rule, also a money saver for the owners who also swapped to paper straws after a short period

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use The DishwasherAlthough the dishwasher saves time and water, some people enjoy washing dishes by hand for the mindfulness practice it can provide. What are some other ways you can practice mindfulness in the kitchen?
Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 3:42 PMI am one of those people who enjoys manually doing dishes. I find it relaxing and I can spend some time thinking. I've never enjoyed drying dishes though! I love baking and cooking, so I could spend more time engaging in that.-
Brittany Murphy 7/31/2024 3:54 PMI can second everything about this! I try to be mindful when cleaning up during the cooking process, it minimized the large dish load at the end too!
