Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Learn about Plastic ProductionWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Victoria Vella 7/31/2023 5:50 PMPlastic production impacts us all from start to finish. The carbon footprint is horrendous and it’s all to make a single use item that likely won’t be recycled. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Numbers EverywhereWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Victoria Vella 7/31/2023 12:29 PMI was not surprised but it's a good reminder as I tend to forget which number is what. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Plastic History BuffHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
Victoria Vella 7/31/2023 4:17 AMKnowing the history of plastic makes me realize that the intentions were good - they were trying to take the burden off of natural resources (elephant's ivory) but no matter what the solution was there was a cost. Plastics did give people more access to things that may have been limited in the past, but now we are a society that expects access to everything. We need to shift our mindset/priorities and do better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Follow the Chasing ArrowsRecycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?
Victoria Vella 7/31/2023 3:59 AMI share what I've learned about recycling with my family and friends. I also share these facts with our community: boy scouts, girl scouts, scientist summer camp, environmental club, etc. in the hopes the attendees also share with their family and friends. Every municipality is different and I emphasize that people need to confirm with their local collection what should actually be in their curbside recycling. Recycle Coach is a good app to use, but getting info directly from your town is best! -
Victoria Vella 7/30/2023 6:14 PMThe final countdown! Let’s go! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Catch Those MicrofibersWhich microfiber solution did you choose? How has it changed your laundry routine?
Victoria Vella 7/29/2023 7:23 PMI just ordered a Cora Ball and will have to wait and see how it changes our laundry routine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Victoria Vella 7/28/2023 12:52 PMThese natural materials break down in the environment without creating microplastics. They are easier to dye with natural dyes rather than toxic dyes for hard to dye synthetics. I will be more conscious of the materials in my clothing. I do have quite a few linen items and even organic cotton as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Sustainable Suds: Pet EditionIn what ways does your pet make your life happier, more interesting, or more rewarding?
-
Kristina Merola 7/30/2023 7:30 PMAwe! So cute. I love that he jumps on the trampoline!🤓

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Use Reusable Baby WipesIn what ways do you model choices that align with your values to your little one? In what other ways could you model values-aligned choices?
Victoria Vella 7/28/2023 6:43 AMPlanning to make a cloth wipe solution based on the learning tools for this action. I haven't bought any wipes for the household this month and plan to do some additional research and change our habits to something waaay more sustainable. Here we go! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Victoria Vella 7/28/2023 6:22 AMI used to compost with the help of family. Recently things have changed and I really need to compost at home. During this ecochallenge, I have been using healthy fruit scraps to make frozen treats for the pup (bananas that were headed for the garbage, apple peels, soft blueberries, etc.) one step in the right direction, but I have lots more to do. My hard to recycle items are going to TerraCycle and I collect plastic film for my town. We are not Zero Waste but our garbage is minimal, will also try to do better!
