Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 20 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Family + Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Bedroom
Proper Clothing Care
All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 30 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
Ditch the plastic jugs, artificial dyes, and harmful ingredients! When it's time to replace my current laundry detergent, I will switch to a natural laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
In the UK, the average person creates 512kg (1,129lbs) of waste in the bathroom over the course of their lifetime - 50% of which ends up in a landfill. As they run out, I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Bathroom
See the Green
An estimated 50,000lbs (23,000kg) of contact lenses end up in sewage sludge in the US each year. This month, I will learn how to recycle used contact lenses and packaging or switch to wearing glasses instead.
Kitchen
Give Veggie Scraps Another Life
Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.
Kitchen
Better Gum
Ever wonder how gum can stay chewy for so long without ever breaking down? Yep - it's plastic! This month, I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Study
Borrowed Books
The average paperback book has the same carbon footprint of driving about 7 miles (11 km) in an average car. Instead of purchasing new books this month, I will borrow books, e-books, and/or audiobooks from my local library or library-affiliated apps, or host a book swap with my friends.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Natural Corks
Natural cork is a sustainable, renewable, and biodegradable material, but many wineries are switching to synthetic corks for their wine bottles. Using a database like CORKWatch, I will choose wines with a natural cork closure, and properly compost or recycle them after enjoying my wine.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Print in Draft Mode
To extend the life of my ink cartridges, I will set my printer default to draft mode to use less ink or toner per print job.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 15 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 2 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Study
Greenwashing Pro
Greenwashing can fool even the most experienced eco-advocate. This month, I will spend 30 minutes learning what greenwashing is, how to spot it, and what I can do about it.
Kitchen
Plastic-Free Produce Storage
Produce doesn't need to be stored in plastic bags to stay fresh! I will learn how to properly store my produce to extend its freshness without single-use plastic.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Better GumWhy do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?
Abbey Vinson 7/31/2024 8:49 PMI chew gum for a variety of reasons. Sometimes I need it to freshen my breath, but most of the time, it’s a hands free fidget. It helps me focus and feel calm. It also helps me combat overeating. I plan to try some eco gum alternatives because the thought of chewing on plastic anymore makes me sick. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Give Veggie Scraps Another LifeMaking veggie broth from scraps doesn't just reduce waste, it can also save you a ton of money! What are some of the ways you use veggie broth in your kitchen?
Abbey Vinson 7/31/2024 8:44 PMI don’t currently use broth much, which is why I was so excited to find the article that gave ideas and recipes! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Go For a WalkWhat have you noticed about your mental and/or physical health while going on daily walks? How has it affected other areas of your life?
Abbey Vinson 7/31/2024 8:41 PMUnsurprisingly, l Feel noticeably much better when I go for a walk or spend time outside. I know this!!! Yet I rarely make enough time to do it. I’m going to continue to try to make this change after July ends. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Abbey Vinson 7/31/2024 8:37 PMIt kind of feels like caring for a loved one or a pet. By investing in the cleanliness and wellbeing of my neighborhood, my neighborhood felt more ‘mine’. It’s also kind of disgustingly fascinating to see what kinds of products the people who live near me use. Apparently I live near a lot of smokers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Proper Clothing CareFast fashion depends on consumers buying into constantly changing trends, only wearing their clothes a handful of times, then tossing and buying more. How can you combat those influences to create a more sustainable wardrobe you'll love, value, and care for long-term?
Abbey Vinson 7/31/2024 9:16 AMI loved this challenge! I feel so much more empowered to care for my clothing properly. Admittedly, I already wash all of my clothes on tap cold water and use the "sense fill" function on my washer, which only fills as much water as the machine perceives is needed. But I have burned items with an iron many times when incorrectly guessing what the fabric is made of! Hopefully that will be an occurrence of the past with my new label reading knowledge. I also dabble in sewing and this information is going to be invaluable going forward!
Now if only I could find a non-passive aggressive way to convey all of this awesome information to the folks who live upstairs in my split unit and always leave the washer and dryer set on MAXIMUM heat...
In that same vein, I think a poster with these symbols explained would be an awesome idea to have posted in a laundromat! I may visit my local laundromat and ask them about it. I bet they would see some significant energy savings if patrons actually followed the temperature recommendations.
Also, just curious - did anyone else out there learn about the wonders of washing your clothes in cold water from Stone-Cold Steve Austin in Tide's "Cold Call" commercials? This is one of my favorite commercials/PSAs and has stuck with me for a long time! -
Abbey Vinson 7/31/2024 6:21 AMIn the vein of avoiding DIYs that actually use MORE plastic, has anyone found a good DIY or substitute for micellar water? -
Abbey Vinson 7/31/2024 6:19 AMHas anyone tried the refillable Blueland tablet options for cleaners? They sound good, but I wonder about the packaging that the refills themselves come in.-
Krystina Jarvis 7/31/2024 9:57 AMSo Blueland claims their pouches are backyard compostable, but they have a layer of aluminum in them, and I've seen photos from people who have put them in their compost and found them perfectly in tact a year later. I don't trust their computability claims... I've also heard many complaints that their sprayer pumps break constantly.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Eco DeodorantDo some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?
Abbey Vinson 7/30/2024 2:03 PMI had already switched away from aluminum deodorants for about 7 years, but finally went all the way and bought some that comes in paper packaging. I don't feel like I ever experienced any of the negative side effects of aluminum deodorant I read about, like staining or skin irritation, but I still don't want it hanging out in my pores!
If only non-aluminum deodorants could also be anti-perspirant. Then we'd have the perfect product! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Sustainable SudsWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Abbey Vinson 7/30/2024 1:58 PMAt least with the options I chose, economic changes were negligible. I didn't save money but also didn't spend significantly more. I was pleasantly surprised to find plastic-free shampoo and conditioner options that were not way more expensive than regular hair care. Though none of them will ever be as cheap as the $1.75 bottle of Suave. But maybe that's a good thing! Sometimes you get what you pay for.
I do have to say that I feel like I finally beat the system now that I don't look at the back of my shampoo bottle and see "water" listed as the first ingredient. And my new shampoo bar lathers just as easily as liquid shampoo. I feel like it is also harder to use too much on accident. PLUS the bars are perfect for traveling! I can take as many ounces of them on a plane as I want! Though it is a bit awkward to wrap up a damp soap bar in a paper towel and pack it when heading back home.
Overall though, love this switch! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Homemade or Refillable CleanersWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
Abbey Vinson 7/30/2024 1:53 PMMaking was kind of fun! But I will say that several of the component ingredients I could only find in plastic bottles. So in making them, I may have just traded one plastic bottle for another... Or bought more plastic in the name of using less... I'm not sure how effective this was for me.-
Krystina Jarvis 7/30/2024 6:56 PMI've moved away from a lot of DIY's after realizing I might actually be making more waste 😅 Especially now that more refillable plastic-free options are readily available!
