In general, the main way I think of using my money to align with my personal values is through making purchases in companies I believe in and donating money to causes I care about. This challenge does have me think outside the box for how my money is being used. For instance, a blog post I read suggested calling your bank to ask how they use the money you invest in savings accounts and such.

Kitchen
Share my "why"
I will record a 15-20 second video sharing why I am taking action for the planet.
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
Don't forget to celebrate the good! This month, I will give shout-outs on social media, my office's internal communication channels, or the Participant Feed to a local company, coworker, friend, or family member for their sustainable efforts.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 60 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Community
Support a Sharing Economy
While society often tells us we need to own everything ourselves, how necessary is that, really? Why spend money on something I'll only use once or a few times when I can borrow, swap, or share instead? This month, instead of buying new, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Start Composting
Composting isn't just good for soil! Composting your food scraps and other organic materials decreases your overall trash output, so you don't have to take the trash out as often and extend the life of your trash bags (i.e. use less plastic!). This month, I will start a compost collection at home, work, or school and avoid sending 1 pounds of food waste to landfill each day.
Bedroom
Rethink Returns
While most stores offer lenient return policies, what actually happens to all of those returns? I will spend 20 minutes learning about what happens to returns and how I can make better purchasing decisions to avoid returns in the future.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 1 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 15 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Bedroom
Recycling Textiles
Every single textile ever made will, at some point, become worn out - and dealing with that waste costs millions of tax dollars every year. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the different types of textile recycling and creating a plan for what I'll do with my clothes and other textiles when they are too worn out to use anymore.
Study
Divest and Reinvest
Does your savings account, retirement account, or investment account support the fossil fuel (and plastics) industry? This month, I will spend 60 minutes investigating where my investments (and where my bank's investments) are going, divest from the fossil fuel industry, and reinvest in ways that are more in alignment with my values.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
Ditch the plastic jugs, artificial dyes, and harmful ingredients! When it's time to replace my current laundry detergent, I will switch to a natural laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Bathroom
See the Green
An estimated 50,000lbs (23,000kg) of contact lenses end up in sewage sludge in the US each year. This month, I will learn how to recycle used contact lenses and packaging or switch to wearing glasses instead.
Community
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Kitchen
Get Scrappy
Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.
Bedroom
Mend and Repair
We've all got it - that thing in the back of our closet we keep saying we'll fix "one day." I will make today that day by learning how to mend or repair ripped or broken items in my home - or by finding a local offering to do it for me.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
Surface cleaners, glass cleaners, floor cleaners, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners...there's a whole lot of plastic waste involved in cleaning our homes - plus ingredients that can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems and our health. This month, I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Kitchen
Is it trash...or a trash bag?
The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Bathroom
Plastic Free TP
Most toilet paper is wrapped in plastic #4, or low-density polyethylene - a thin plastic film that cannot be recycled back into more plastic film. To avoid this plastic wrapping, I will purchase toilet paper wrapped in paper instead, or use a reusable toilet paper option.
Bathroom
Bidet All Day
The average American uses about 141 rolls of toilet paper each year, most of which is wrapped in plastic film. To cut down on my toilet paper usage, I will install a bidet in my bathroom.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 60 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Share My Actions
One of the best ways we can create change in our communities is simply by talking about it! This month, I will make my environmental actions visible by sharing about them on my social media networks and the Plastic Free Ecochallenge participant feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Divest and ReinvestWhere we choose to spend (and invest) our money is one of the most powerful ways we can shape the future we want. What are some other ways you can ensure that your money is being used in ways that align with your personal values?
Cameron Wescott 7/08/2024 5:12 PMThis was one of the most intimidating challenges for me so far. I found the Fossil Free Funds sight which the Ecochallenge shared to be very helpful. It let me look up the holdings in my Roth IRA and also let me search for new ones based off of environmental ratings amidst projected growth ratings. I will continue to use it as I move forward with divesting and reinvesting. It is also a thought-provoking challenge because retirement accounts have me think about my personal future, but learning about divesting and reinvesting has me thinking about the future of the world. Because this is such a big challenge, I am taking it one step at a time.
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Whole Foods MealsShare your favorite whole foods-based meal recipe with us!
Cameron Wescott 7/08/2024 4:24 PMI was brainstorming with a friend, and we were finding it almost impossible to come up with a balanced meal that has absolutely no plastic involved. I would love to hear if anyone has any ideas. I have been making a lot of spring rolls and sandwiches this summer, which are mostly veggies, but even bread and rice paper come in plastic.-
Joleena Jewell 7/10/2024 10:20 AMI have shifted my focus to the produce department and canned goods for this very reason. As for bread, maybe bake your own or find a friend who likes to bake?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Rethink ReturnsHow has learning what happens to returns influenced how you make purchasing decisions?
Cameron Wescott 7/08/2024 4:16 PMFrom what I can see in my initial searching, it seems that a most returned clothing goes to the landfill. I was having trouble finding out what happens to returned items. If anyone has more info on the latter, let me know. It seems like items have more of a chance to be refurbished and resold, especially if they have higher value. It seems like one of the best ways to avoid this environmental impact is to try to shop for clothes in person so you know that you will like what you get and that it will fit. -
Cameron Wescott 7/07/2024 10:59 AMI have a snake(her name is Sibilant and she is perfect☺️). I try to make most of her enrichment by reusing items. Pictured is her exploring a cardboard drink organizer that I actually asked a grocery store if I could take home since it was in a stack of boxes they were taking to discard. I love how this intention invites me to be creative and also lets me be a good snake parent while saving money. I would love to hear if anyone does any other creative reuse for your pets or has any idea for enrichment making!-
Alex Bond 7/09/2024 7:53 AMIroh loves to play with bread twist ties so we use those for his enrichment!

REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Cameron Wescott 7/07/2024 10:41 AMThe more I delve into exploring actions for Plastic Free July, the more I am noticing the importance of embracing the imperfection. There is plastic used almost everywhere and it is seemingly impossible to get completely separate from it. I am focusing on progress over perfection and acknowledging some times where plastic is the necessary evil. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Start CompostingDo an inventory of how much food waste you would save from going to the landfill if you start composting all of the time. What are the added benefits of having compost that is readily accessible?
Cameron Wescott 7/07/2024 10:38 AMIn addition to being better for the environment by allowing food to break down naturally, collecting my compost to take to the work compost bin has made it so that the kitchen trash bin fill less quickly and is less smelly and messy. -
Cameron Wescott 7/05/2024 6:11 AMWould anyone want to look into touring a waste management facility with me?-
Alex Bond 7/05/2024 11:00 AMme me me!!
