Bathroom

That Was a Close Shave

Who says we need 5 blades and a ribbon of shaving cream on every $5 razor blade cartridge, when a single blade causes less irritation and costs 92% less? This month, I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Proper Clothing Care

All those symbols on our clothes, sheets, and towels actually have meanings! To ensure that I'm caring for my clothes properly, I will spend 20 minutes learning what the care symbols mean and laundry best practices to make all of my textiles last as long as possible.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Embrace Imperfection

Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Bedroom

Multiple Wears Before Washing

The simple, necessary, daily act of washing our clothes slowly degrades the quality of our clothes due to the friction involved in the process. To extend the life of my clothes, whenever possible, I will wear items multiple times before washing.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

A Greener Shower

Most conventional shower curtain liners are made from polyvinyl chloride (or PVC), which contains chlorine, phthalates, and plasticizers, and typically need replaced often. When it's time to replace my shower curtain liner, I will replace it with a plastic-free option and research the best ways to care for it.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Use What You Have

The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Bathroom

Brush with Bamboo

In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Kitchen

Skip Plastic Bags

Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Kitchen

Is it trash...or a trash bag?

The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Bathroom

Travel Toiletries

Travel-size toiletries aren't just more expensive per ounce, they also have a higher plastic-to-contents ratio, and result in over 980 tonnes (2.2 million pounds) of plastic waste each year. If traveling this month, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bedroom

Ditch Dryer Sheets

Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Bathroom

Pearly Whites

Nearly all toothpaste tubes are made from multiple layers of different types of plastic and aluminum, making them impossible to recycle and destined for landfill. When it's time to replace my current toothpaste, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Embrace Imperfection
How has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?

It's helped me not only in my plastic-free journey but also in my mental health. I used to want to replace things for any little imperfection; I would actually get bent out of shape if I saw something chipped or nicked. Little did I know that it had to do with my depression and anxiety; learned that through therapy. Embracing the imperfections in myself has made me more open to accepting imperfections in other things.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Kitchen Is it trash...or a trash bag?
It's only "single-use" if it's only used once! What are some other creative ways to reuse unavoidable "single-use" items?

I'm happy to say that I already do this! I learned this from my mom growing up that we don't throw away plastic bags unless we use them for other purposes. We've used bread bags to store my bouncy balls when I was little. Today we use those bags for dog poop bags when walking our dog.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Kitchen Skip Plastic Bags
It can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?

I leave my reusable bags in my car. That way I never forget them when I go to the store. Everyone that knows me knows that I love reusable bags! I tend to get them from every store I shop at.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Use What You Have
Besides the economic benefits of using the things we already own, how can this practice impact our lives in other ways and influence the way we interact with "things"?

    Richard Wheeler's avatar
    Richard Wheeler 7/16/2024 6:18 AM
This helps me to be mindful of my purchases. A lot of times, as I'm sure most people do, I think ahead and buy things to store for future use. The problem is that I forget about the items I've already purchased and end up buying more stuff. Being mindful about using what you already have can help to reduce the amount of "things" in your home.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Multiple Wears Before Washing
In addition to helping clothes last longer, washing clothes less frequently also saves water by running the washing machine less often. As the climate and water situations change, what are some other ways both your household and our community could become more resilient?

    Richard Wheeler's avatar
    Richard Wheeler 7/16/2024 6:16 AM
I've been taking care to wear my clothes more than once before washing. I used to be someone who washed after one wear.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Brush with Bamboo
What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

    Richard Wheeler's avatar
    Richard Wheeler 7/16/2024 6:13 AM
It's Prime Day on Amazon! So I took advantage of it by buying bamboo toothbrushes and eco-friendly toothpaste tablets.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Pearly Whites
Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

    Richard Wheeler 7/16/2024 6:10 AM
I was happy to find that the plastic-free options for toothpaste were affordable. I just ordered some online. Can't wait to try it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bedroom Ditch Dryer Sheets
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

    Richard Wheeler's avatar
    Richard Wheeler 7/16/2024 6:09 AM
I like using the dryer balls better than the sheets. The sheets create too much waste product. I did not know they were plastic-based. Glad I made the switch.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Bathroom Travel Toiletries
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Richard Wheeler's avatar

I had a bad habit of buying new travel-size toiletries every time I went on a trip. This past weekend, I used previously bought toiletries when I went out of town.
