"To remind people that actions matter, that the items we choose to use can affect so many things in our environment. Each action we take in this one month can have the butterfly effect, build on it, make plastic free July, everyday in your little corner of the world!"

Kitchen
Get Scrappy
Get creative in the kitchen (or the garden)! Before tossing food scraps, I'll explore other ways to utilize the scraps and give them another life.
Kitchen
Give Veggie Scraps Another Life
Vegetable broth cartons are not easily recycled and often not accepted for recycling at all. To avoid or reduce my use of these cartons, I will save my vegetable scraps and fresh herb stems to make homemade vegetable broth instead.
Kitchen
Save Jars for Reuse
Pinterest may want you to think that you need a cupboard full of matching mason jars, but reusing what we already have is one of the best ways to reduce our waste. This month, instead of recycling glass jars (such as pasta sauce, pickles, and salsa jars), I will save them to reuse for food storage.
Kitchen
Dive Into Expiration Dates
Just because something is past its "expiration date," it might not actually be expired! I will spend 15 minutes learning about the difference between best by, use by, and sell by dates and how to tell if my food is actually expired.
Kitchen
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Kitchen
Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Kitchen
Is it trash...or a trash bag?
The plastic industry has convinced us that some plastic bags are "trash bags," while others are just "trash." Instead of throwing empty bags away (such as bread bags, pet food bags, etc.), I will reuse them as trash bags.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
Whenever possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags. I will either use my own reusable bags, or keep my items loose.
Study
Greenwashing Pro
Greenwashing can fool even the most experienced eco-advocate. This month, I will spend 5 minutes learning what greenwashing is, how to spot it, and what I can do about it.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit of my trash and recycling to understand how much waste I create and create a plan for where I can reduce the most.
Study
Investigate Oil Subsidies
Our tax dollars are subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, making the cost of plastics artificially low and encouraging further plastics production. I will spend 15 minutes learning about oil subsidies and how I can advocate for their elimination.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
Conventional deodorant tubes are typically made from plastics #4 and #5, which are rarely accepted for recycling - especially together. When it's time to replace my current deodorant, I will replace it with a plastic-free option.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
Who says we need 5 blades and a ribbon of shaving cream on every $5 razor blade cartridge, when a single blade causes less irritation and costs 92% less? This month, I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
Globally, packaging manufacturers make about $25 billion each year on plastic beauty and personal care packaging. That's a whole lot of plastic - nearly all of which ends up in landfills. When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
In the US, about 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year. And because plastic is designed to last, nearly every plastic toothbrush ever created still exists. When it's time to replace my current toothbrush, I will replace it with a plastic-free bamboo option.
Kitchen
Whole Foods Meals
Prioritizing whole foods is one of the most effective ways to avoid single-use plastic in the kitchen, since most whole foods can be purchased without any packaging. This month, I will prepare 1 whole foods-based meals at home each day.
Kitchen
Take the pre-survey!
Help us make the Plastic Free Ecochallenge the best it can be! Take the challenge pre-survey (and look out for the post-survey at the end of the challenge!) so we can better understand the impact the challenge has and how we can improve in the future. Plus, you'll earn points for completing it! Thank you!
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
Plastic sheets coated in softeners, lubricants, and fragrances, dryer sheets just aren't great for the planet or our bodies. Instead, I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bedroom
Declutter Sustainably
While it can be tempting to throw away (or drop off at Goodwill) any and everything that no longer brings us joy, there are so many options that are better for the planet! This month, I will declutter my home and properly dispose or re-home the things I no longer want.
Bedroom
Clean the Dryer Vent
Every time we tumble dry our laundry, our clothes' lifespans get a little shorter. The lint trap is evidence of the shedding fibers and our clothes slowly losing their quality. The less time our clothes need to be in the dryer, the longer they'll last. So this month, I will clean my dryer's interior and exterior air vents to help the dryer work more efficiently (and extend the life of the dryer!).
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

laura cecile wulf-eck 7/31/2024 6:18 PMwell guys, we made it thru July!! Great work everyone. Let's take what we have learned and use it to make greater, long lasting changes in our behaviors. We will never be perfect, but be aware of the choices that you are making. Let's make this Plastic free 2024!!!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Ditch Dryer SheetsOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/29/2024 5:19 AMThis was a really hard one for me, I am using dryer balls and the sticky things in the wash to remove pet hair. So far so good. Not sure yet that I can switch completely (I wear a lot of black and have a dalmation that sheds) but sheets, towels, all non black items are dryer balls for sure! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Declutter SustainablyCompared to your previous experiences with decluttering, how was this experience with sustainable decluttering different?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/29/2024 5:16 AMOne of the things I always do when I am decluttering, is send a group text to friends and family or on my neighborhood facebook page to see if someone is looking for that item. I love when I can give new life to something that I no longer need, but it is still of use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Clean the Dryer VentWhen was the last time you cleaned your dryer's air vents? Was it easier or more difficult than you anticipated?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/29/2024 5:14 AMI have a long extension on my shop vac and I go through the outside and the inside vents. It is not hard at all, the worst part is dragging the vacuum around, but I do think my clothes dry faster and I always worry about fire hazards so this puts my mind at ease on that . WIN WIN -
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/28/2024 9:21 AMaccording to SCZ director, 9 of the 13 species of bird that were indigenous to Guam, were brought to extinction in the wild by Brown Tree Snakes. Scott is very involved in the reintroduction/preservation of the Guam Kingfisher. We have one adult here at the zoo as well as having a hatching program for the Guam Kingfisher eggs from around the country. The fact that the population of Guam kingfisher is so small, The AZA can really control the gene pool by sending eggs to zoos and following the lineage. Palmera Island is the goal for releasing Kingfishers, because there are no snakes and there are no birds that are natural enemies of the Guam Kingfisher. SCZ has a great quarantine area that raises chicks and protects the population from diseases, so that when they are brought to Palmera, there will not be any new diseases introduced. -
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/26/2024 8:40 AMWell guys we are down to the finish line of July, let's finish strong and carry what we have learned through the rest of the year! Be more aware of how our actions have a butterfly effect. We can cause change or chaos, it is up to us!
Good Job Team Guam Kingfisher! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/21/2024 9:29 AMI really liked the idea of a "waste audit". It forces you to look at what you are using daily, and try to figure out ways to cut back. There is so much that we do not need. I always say I don't need plastic ware but if I do get plastic ware with take out, I use it for digging in pots that I am putting plants in. They get used numerous times before they ever get thrown away. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Skip Plastic BagsIt can be easy to forget to bring your reusable bags to the store with you - especially if you're going somewhere besides the grocery store. What are your favorite ways to remember your reusable bags?
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/20/2024 8:12 AMI have been using my own bags for years! I gifted some to my Dad recently and really try to get friends and family to make the change. Personally, I think the flat bottomed bags I use are easier to load, carry, and I can keep them in my car all of the time for the grocery store and for when I go to estate and garage sales. If I don't have one, I force myself to carry my purchases, so that I do not forget next time (also cuts way down on how much I can buy) -
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/19/2024 2:23 PMI feel like I have been a little lax this week, Just want to remind everyone to do their check ins and keep up the good work! -
laura cecile wulf-eck 7/16/2024 9:36 AMOne of the really cool things here at the Sedgwick county Zoo is our Green Team. We give "Green Grants" out to departments that submit a request for an item that falls under our renew, reuse recycle green guidelines.Yesterday we approved the purchase of a Hydroponic garden system for our preschool so that our students can grow their own veggies for snack time! We also give out these cool pins when we see a guest doing something green within the zoo!
