Embrace Imperfection
Eliminating 100% of all plastic from our lives simply isn't possible. Throughout this month, I will embrace imperfection in my plastic-free journey while exploring and testing new ways to reduce my plastic footprint.
Family + Pets
Use What You Have
The only thing worse than a single-use item is a zero-use item! I will use (and use up) what I already have in my home before buying something new.
Community
Go For a Walk
Science has shown that focused time in nature calms our over-worked frontal lobe and gives space for the areas of our brain associated with emotions, pleasure, and empathy to take over, providing a sense of calm that is measurable in brain scans and even blood tests. Each day this month, I will spend 60 minutes outside in nature, and share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the Participant Feed.
Family + Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Community
Keep My Community Clean
In addition to refusing and reducing my consumption of single-use plastics, I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day of the Plastic Free Ecochallenge.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kimberly Zimmerman 7/29/2024 7:18 AMI've been in a rut and sad to see so many people in our community complaining about litter and dog poop. This challenge was just what I needed to provide that extra motivational push to not complain, just take action and pickup the litter, scoop the poop and dispose of properly. Seeing a clean neighborhood feels nice and there isn't nearly as much complaining from our neighbors. win-win -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Embrace ImperfectionHow has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?
Kimberly Zimmerman 7/19/2024 11:04 AMUgh, it's so hard to be 100% plastic free. Wanted to not buy herbs in little plastic containers in the grocery produce section. Bought a herb plant instead with the intention of planting it for continual herbs at home. The plant pot and wrapper were plastic. :(-
Monterey Bay Aquarium 7/23/2024 10:48 AMIt's about progress, not perfection. You got this!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets All Natural Pet ToysIn what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?
Kimberly Zimmerman 7/18/2024 1:53 PMVisited a dog food store and successfully walked out with new dog food information and zero new toys. The hide a treat toys are so popular now, so I'm just using his current toys in new ways - hiding treats in them then wrapping them up in his blanket and under his bed. Takes him a while to figure things out.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kimberly Zimmerman 7/18/2024 1:50 PMInstead of power walking throuh the neighborhood, I slowed down, let the dog sniffed and started noticing and picking up so much litter. -
Kimberly Zimmerman 7/17/2024 8:21 AMI live in a community where a lot of construction is happening. This morning's 1 mile walk with the dog provided so many screws, plastic straps, lunch litter, straws...etc for me to pick up.
