    Bathroom Travel Toiletries
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

I prefer bar soap over liquid, always have. It's easier to refill my travel size containers than to try and go to the store and purchase more or to reorder them. Once I've returned from a trip I immediately refill containers so that the next trip everything is ready to go. I don't see changing habit changing. I also take care of refills for my husband. If I didn't he would just go out and buy whatever he needed.

What's the most creative way you've reused a jar in your home?

I’ve used a jar to collect old batteries until I can appropriately recycle them.

    Study Numbers Everywhere
Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

I used to have this poster in my classroom to help my students understand what plastics could be recycled easier than others. Most recy ling companies will only accept certain plastics while others accept them all. It was always an eye opener for the kids at the time and a great visual to help remember options when making purchases at the store. The most surprising plastic that is harder or can't be recycled is the vinyl material that detergent containers are made of. After learning about the difficulties with those containers is the reason I switched my detergent to a more earth friendly packaging like Earth Breeze.

    Bathroom Sustainable Suds
What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

I have found that bar hand soap lasts longer. Plus I get an added benefit of buying pretty soap that adds a pop of color and fun to washing my hands.

Kitchen Give Veggie Scraps Another Life
Making veggie broth from scraps doesn't just reduce waste, it can also save you a ton of money! What are some of the ways you use veggie broth in your kitchen?

I've started using veggie broth in place of chicken broth in some of my dishes. For example, asparagus risotto tastes so much better with vegetable broth than with chicken broth which is what it calls for. The house smells so good when making the broth. I really enjoy making it on a cloudy and some times stormy day. You can also add it to mashed potatoes. I add sour cream, milk and butter with a splash or two of the vegetable broth; yum!

    Bathroom Embrace Imperfection
How has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?

I'm very aware of my routines and what I purchase. I think I do a decent job when it's just me. However when the family is involved then I struggle with choices they make and do my best to show an alternative option. The problem is they don't see the need to make these small changes and it drives me crazy. I do what I can to change small things here and there that I can control. Decisions have to be made to purchase something that costs a little more and is more earth friendly versus something that is cheaper and not earth friendly. It's a give and take at the moment. Not willing to get rid of my 2010 Crossover for something that is newer and electric but willing to be mindful of certain items that I purchase.

    Kitchen Get Scrappy
How difficult was this action for you? Is this something you'll be continuing after this challenge ends?

This is something that I have to be very mindful about. It is so easy to just throw stuff in the trash and be done with it. We've now started making frozen meals with the leftovers and have used those frozen meals as a quick something when no one is wanting to cook!

We provide meals for my husband's mother every couple of weeks (we take turns with his brothers). On the weeks that i 's someone else's turn to take meals I've started saving the leftovers (those that will freeze well) to take to her when it's our week to provide meals. We have learned to cut back on how much food we cook now

I love leftovers! I hate having to waste food, and it saves time on meal prep for the next day!

A little about our painted dogs. We have a group of 4 brothers. They are 5 years old and came to us from the Endangered Wolf Center in Missouri.

Their names are Rowdy, Tito, Torgerson (Torgy) and N’gamba. We tell them apart by their white spots on their lower backs. Rowdy (stripe), Tito (giraffe shape), Torgy (diamond) and N’gamba (no white).

I have looked for laundry detergent sheets but have never found them in stores. A few weeks ago, I found these in Walmart! I have started using them this week and so far I really like them. Here is a video showing how quickly they dissolve.

Family + Pets DIY Cat Litter
Other species can teach us important lessons about ourselves and life in general. What has your cat taught you?

I have a very needy little girl. She does not like change and is not happy about switching out her litter. She is very reluctant in using her box and has been very vocal about her displeasure. I will give it another week to see if she will stop being so reluctant. What has she taught me....she has a very strong and determined mindset on what she will and will not tolerate.

Thank you for being sensitive to your girl's needs and preferences. I learned the hard way that when cats' routines and desires aren't respected, the cats can experience so much anxiety that it makes them ill. A neighbor asked me to take his cat because she wasn't dealing well with the new dog in the household, and when I went to get the cat, she was practically bald below the waist from overgrooming. The vet actually had to put her on phenobarbital for a while.
