How has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?

I've been trying to buy more clothing that has natural fibers (cotton, wool, and linen), and to buy clothing second-hand, but often there is still some plastic fiber blended in (e.g. some spandex in socks), or the clothing can still come with plastic packaging. It still feels really nice to think about how much less plastic is in my clothing, and when buying wool, I actually need to clean the clothes less, so I am sending less microfibers into the water supply by doing less laundry.

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

I take a sense of pride in having a litter-free community and feel more ownership over keeping it clean. I have met new neighbors and had conversations with people I haven't met before while picking up litter.

Why do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?

Instead of gum, altoids come in metal containers with a paper liner. There is a plastic wrap around the container, but less plastic than a gum container.

I was able to take a large glass mason jar to the market and have them fill with yogurt. This prevented purchasing 6-7 single use yogurt cups from the grocery store. A person goal is to cut back on purchasing single serve yogurt containers.

Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

There seems to be a lot of debate on this topic. But the fact that most deodorant containers aren't recyclable is a really good reason why you should switch to a plastic free version.

Making veggie broth from scraps doesn't just reduce waste, it can also save you a ton of money! What are some of the ways you use veggie broth in your kitchen?

I like using broth to cook rice instead of just water. Gives the rice extra flavor which is nice.

For my Clevelanders, yesterday I went to the West Side Market and took a bunch of plastic containers I had saved from my takeout (those standard black ones with clear tops that come with EVERY MEAL) and was able to have the vendors place food items directly into the containers. Instead of coming home with another 8 plastic To-Go containers, I took my own. I brought home yogurts, peanut butter, nuts, and grains without using any new disposable plastic. So WSM allows your own containers :)

It can be really hard to try and be perfectly eco friendly all the time. The important thing is that we are trying, not that we succeed. Cuz if everyone tries, that's better than no one trying at all.

I took my reusable cup to Starbucks yesterday to eliminate using a plastic one. They are officially accepting reusable cups again AND giving a 10 cent discount for bringing your own!
