In late June I learned about the Hefty ReNew Program and called Rumpke about it. After I was told they did not participate, I called Hefty and spoke to a ReNew Program representative who said that Rumpke does, indeed, participate in my area. I was given instructions about collection of the accepted items and immediately purchased the necessary bags and began to collect the items. The representative also said she would contact Rumpke about it.

Besides reusing materials, what are some other environmental, societal, and economical benefits of recycling our old electronics?

The electronics recycling center I used doesn't just recycle components - they also refurbish and resell as much as possible, so they're providing a great option for the community to get refurbished tech (including gaming computers, laptops, components, and accessories) locally and less expensively, while keeping valuable resources out of landfills and in the circular economy.

I've had a Guppyfriend bag for several years but have been forgetting to use it recently. I'm glad that this challenge helped me get back into the habit!

How has embracing imperfection impacted your plastic-free journey?

I used to be so particular about not using ANY plastics. It pretty much became my whole personality (even more so than it still is 😅). Eventually I realized that while there is a LOT that we can do as individuals, we also need top-down change to happen at the same time, and depriving myself of little things that bring me joy - although packaged in plastic - isn't really doing any good for anyone. A sustainable lifestyle has to be personally sustainable too. So now my motto is "do what you can, when you can, where you can."

Oh gosh... I have several! My top three though would probably be black bean tacos with avocado cilantro lime sauce, lentil stuffed pepper soup, and chickpea tikka masala. All of them are so filling, SO tasty, and super easy to make! 10/10 would recommend 👌

I can't believe it is the last day! I do plan to continue many of the things I started in this challenge, and maybe explore more options!

What did you learn about bioplastic production and disposal? Did anything surprise you? Are bioplastics accepted by your city's waste management?

I always thought bioplastics had no negative impacts, boy was I wrong and that was what surprised me! Our city doesn't have waste management, it is handled via a private company and yes they are accepted!

Had you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?

Yes, I first learned about the dangers of balloons to wildlife at the Zoo. I have shared this messaging with friends and family around the holidays. We are a no balloon family!
