This year’s challenge was fun—like last year I wanted to see how well I would do with some daily actions that I was already trying to make into habits. Next year I want to CHALLENGE myself to pick up some activities that I’ve never done before.

    Study Recycle My Tech
Besides reusing materials, what are some other environmental, societal, and economical benefits of recycling our old electronics?

    Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:48 PM
Old electronics are usually only considered old by their current owner. If that tech isn't broken, someone (somewhere) could probably use it just as well as if it were brand new. Taking the electronics to a business to get fixed up probably has the potential to double their lifespan for its new owner.

    Kitchen Dive Into Expiration Dates
Were you surprised by anything you learned about expiration dates in the US? Has it changed the way you make decisions around purchasing or discarding food?

I usually trust my eyes and my nose when it comes to purchasing or discarding food nearing their expiration dates--they're not always accurate!

    Bedroom Ditch Dryer Sheets
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

    Rachel Haywood's avatar
    Rachel Haywood 7/31/2024 4:25 PM
Potentially every single-use item can be harmful. If it's only meant to be used once, think about how quickly someone can just discard it on the ground and leave it to rot. When it doesn't break down, the impact on the environment from all of these items piles up!

Bathroom That Was a Close Shave
What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

I can make a disposable razor last a lot longer than it should, but the switch to a steel razor has been so effortless! Disposable razors were probably necessary at one point in history (maybe closer to their creation) but now I'm wondering why everyone doesn't have a steel razor.

Same! My favorite plastic-free swap I've ever made is my safety razor and I will talk about it endlessly to anyone who will listen lol

    Bedroom Declutter Sustainably
Compared to your previous experiences with decluttering, how was this experience with sustainable decluttering different?

I belong to a Buy Nothing group in Waynedale on Facebook. People post Asks, Gifts, and Gratitude. I like to participate in this group. No one is allowed to charge anything. Participants post just about anything on the site from used clothes, partial packages of items that are new, such as diapers that have been outgrown, and even services. I like to post clothes, pet items, furniture, tickets for experiences, etc. People also request things they need, especially things they might only need a small amount of or would like to borrow. It's a really great concept and great way to meet neighbors. I really need to participate more, especially in the gifting department! I'm currently doing some purging, so I'm going to strive and put items on the group and offer them to folks who really need them.

Family + Pets Sustainable Suds: Pet Edition
In what ways does your pet make your life happier, more interesting, or more rewarding?

Bath time is more enjoyable for both me and the dog when the bath bubbles I'm using are good for her health and great for the environment. I have a soap-lady that supplies my sustainable dog shampoo.

Study Buy Only What I Need
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

I've noticed that as I run out of certain bath and beauty products, I can actually go without a replacement a lot of the time--some of those purchases were frivolous from the start so once I used it up this month I agreed to "no more".

Just about everything made out of plastic could be potentially harmful to humans. It pollutes our lands and waterways as it enters the ecosystem. It gets into the food chain and eventually into us.

    Bedroom Rethink Returns
How has learning what happens to returns influenced how you make purchasing decisions?

    Sara Valentine's avatar
    Sara Valentine 7/31/2024 4:01 PM
Before doing some research on returns, I didn't realize how much is just thrown away or wasted. I would rather donate the item or give it to a friend than waste it, even if I took a financial loss. I definitely think through purchases more and try to get clothes and other items in brick and mortar stores where I can try on or see the items in real life.
